Crimson Rallies to Take Cream and Crimson Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kicking off the Indiana baseball Cream and Crimson Scrimmage, the Crimson (coached by assistants Ty Neal and Ted Tom) rallied with two runs in the sixth and three in the eighth to knock off the Cream (headed by assistant Micah Nori), 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman right fielder Trevor McConnell drove home junior shortstop Keith Haas with the game-winning, two-out base hit.
The Cream jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second. Junior first baseman Ben Greenspan, who finished the contest 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run, took an Eric Wagner offering out of the park. Sophomore third baseman crossed home with the Cream's second run on a ground out by freshman center fielder Cameron Satterwhite.
Cream starter Chris McCombs cruised through the first five innings without allowing a score, but the sophomore ran into trouble in the sixth. Junior center fielder Reggie Watson laced a triple to left field, brining home junior left fielder Steve Powell to make it 2-1.
Sophomore right-hander Andy Casper relieved McCombs and retired the first batter he faced before Haas delivered a sacrifice fly to even the contest at 2-2, where it remained until McConnell's base knock in the eighth. Freshman Billy O'Conner added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run single to right, and senior Clint Crosier retired the side in the bottom half of the frame to clinch the Crimson's victory.
Crosier earned the victory with 4 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. The southpaw held the Cream club to two hits and one walk to go along with two punchouts. Wagner tossed the first 3 2/3, giving up one earned run on four hits.
McCombs final line saw him surrender two runs in 5-plus innings on six hits with one base on balls and one strikeout.
Offensively, Haas ended the afternoon 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run, while Brant added two hits in four at-bats. Every hitter in the Crimson lineup recorded at least one hit as the team pounded 11 total base knocks.
The teams return to action on Thursday afternoon as the Cream looks to even the three-game series by sending freshman left-hander Joe Vicini to the mound. Sophomore southpaw Brad Davidson will oppose Vicini for the Crimson. Game time for the seven-inning contest is set for 3:15 p.m. at Sembower Field.
