Hoosiers Set for Big Ten Showdown with Ohio State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 7 Indiana field hockey team continues on its quest for the program's first ever berth in the NCAA Tournament this weekend with Big Ten foe Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. on Columbus, Ohio.
The Hoosiers are riding a nine-game winning streak; the longest win steak by any Hoosier field hockey team in history. Closing in on 13 wins, the Hoosiers are one win away from breaking last year's all-time season wins mark. As of Oct. 11, the Hoosiers have scored in 21 straight contests and are averaging 3.5 goals per game.
Along with Penn State, both Indiana and Ohio State are unbeaten in the Big Ten. All three teams are tied for first with 3-0 records and have yet to play each other.
This season, Indiana is boasting one of the toughest defenses in the conference. In the last two outings, three Hoosiers have recorded defensive saves. Freshman Dani Castro, sophomore Erin Isler and junior Morgan Miller scored the first three non-goalkeeper saves of the year.
Both junior Lydia Schrott and senior Kayla Bashore have tied the single-season record in goals (10). Sophomore Meredith Brown needs four more assists to become the single-season assists leader. Hoosier seniors Lesley Wiler, Morgan Albini and Nikki Orciuch's 70 career games placed the three at the top of all-time games played.
Indiana's pair of wins over Northwestern and Louisville gave the 2005 team the single-season for goal (45), assists (34) and shots (289) record. Indiana is one win away from becoming the winningest field hockey team in history.
Scouting the Buckeyes
Like Indiana, Ohio State is unbeaten in conference play. The Buckeyes are 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten. The only OSU losses have come from highly-ranked Maryland and Duke early in the season.
The last time the Buckeyes took the field was on Tuesday against Kent State where OSU prevailed 4-2. The win marks Ohio State's eleventh consecutive win.
Leading the Buckeyes in scoring is Lucy Clayton with 11 goals and two assists. Clayton is followed in scoring by Leticia Fragapane and Yesenia Luces with nine goals each. Goalkeeper Lindsay Williams has started all 13 games for the Buckeyes, has a goals against average of 1.37 and has recorded 37 saves so far in 2005. As of Oct. 12, Ohio State is outscoring their opponents 47-18.
The Indiana-Ohio State Series The Hoosiers and the Buckeyes have met a total of six times with Ohio State holding the 4-2 advantage in the series. The last time the two teams met was on Oct. 29, 2004. Frederique Meeuwsen tallied two goals in the 3-1 win over the Buckeyes in Bloomington. Ohio State was held scoreless until the 58th minute of play. Also scoring for the Hoosiers was Nikki Orciuch off the assist from Lydia Schrott. The win marked the third time Meeuwsen scored multiple goals in a game and the team's only Big Ten win of the season. Indiana's only other win over OSU came on Oct. 5, 2002 by a score of 3-2.
