Tudela, Zayner Earn National Team of the Week Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After a stellar week of play, junior midfielder Josh Tudela continued to earn honors being named to a pair of publication's national teams of the week. The Evansville, Ind., native was selected to College Soccer News and Soccer America National Teams of the Week for his play against Louisville and Michigan. Junior back Jed Zayner also was selected to a national team of the week earning the honor from Top Drawer Soccer.
Tudela is the fourth Hoosier to be named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week. He joined senior Brian Plotkin (Sept. 5), junior Jacob Peterson (Sept. 12) and freshman Lee Nguyen (Sept. 19) to earn the accolade. He also joined Plotkin (Sept. 7) and sophomore Greg Stevning (Sept. 7) to be named to the Soccer America squad.
On Oct. 5 at Louisville, Tudela scored both Hoosier goals. He headed in a corner kick in the 19th minute from freshman Lee Nguyen before bending a free kick around the wall to ice the match in the 82nd minute. Against Michigan with the Hoosiers leading, 1-0, he went far post from 18 yards off an assist from senior midfielder Jordan Chirico, clinching a 2-0 win.
With his three goals, Tudela moved into a tie with junior forward Jacob Peterson for the team lead with five tallies on the season. In fact, Tudela's five goals this season are the first regular-season markers of his career. Coming into his junior campaign, Tudela had scored two career goals for IU, both in the NCAA Tournament. He also ranks second on the team in points with 12. Following his performances at Louisville and Michigan, Tudela was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and IU Athlete of the Week.
Zayner earned his first national team of the week honor this season. After helping IU to its seventh and eighth shutouts of the season against Louisville and Michigan, he was named to Top Drawer Soccer's weekly team. It is the second time in his career, Zayner has been named to a national team of the week. Last season, he was selected to the Soccer America National Team of the Week on Oct. 26.
For the season, the Hoosier defense leads the nation in shutout percentage, blanking eight of 11 foes. Zayner also has organized from his center back position a defense that has a goals against average of 0.43, which ranks third nationally.
The Hoosiers conclude their four-match road trip with a pair of conference affairs over the weekend. Indiana travels to Madison, Wis., to battle the Badgers at 8 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 14. On Sunday, Oct. 16, the Hoosiers will square off with Northwestern at 3 p.m. CT.
