Crimson Stuns Cream in Final At-Bat

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As was the case in the opener of the Indiana baseball Cream and Crimson Scrimmage, the Crimson (coached by assistants Ty Neal and Ted Tom) scored three runs in its final at-bat to drop the Cream (led by assistant Micah Nori), 7-6, on Thursday afternoon. Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Crimson squad plated three with two outs, capped by a bases-loaded walk to freshman right fielder Trevor McConnell, who collected the game-winning RBI for the second straight day.
Both teams netted a score in the first inning before the Cream jumped ahead 5-1 with a four-run fourth. Sophomore third baseman Arden McWilliams stepped up with the bags filled and lined a shot down the left-field line to score the first two runs of the inning.
Senior left fielder Zach Boswell followed with a run-scoring single, and McWilliams walked home with the final tally of the inning on a balk.
Needing a rally to get back in the game, the Crimson team got one in the home half of the sixth. With runners on first and second, junior third baseman Steve Head singled home junior shortstop Keith Haas to make it 5-2.
McConnell then delivered a clutch two-out two-bagger, knocking in Head and pinch-runner Tyler Tufts and capping the three-run outburst.
Freshman designated hitter Jason Dew gave the Cream a two-run cushion after driving in junior first baseman Ben Greenspan, but the lead would not hold up. Before McConnell's clinching walk, junior second baseman Michael Nilles found a hole through the left side for a two-run single to even things at 6-6.
Pitching 3 1/3 innings of relief, Doug Fleenor earned the victory. The sophomore held the Cream to one run on three hits with no bases on balls.
Freshman southpaw Joe Vicini turned in a solid start for the Cream. Vicini went 5 2/3, surrendering two runs on four hits in addition to three Ks.
McWilliams ended the afternoon 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run, while Greenspan went 2-for-3 with one run and RBI.
Senior center fielder Reggie Watson (2 runs) and Head (1 RBI, 1 run) each collected two hits for the Cream.
The final game of the scrimmage will take place on Saturday at Sembower Field.
