Hoosiers Have Strong Outing at ITA All-American Championship

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Seniors Sarah Batty, Dora Vastag and junior Laura McGaffigan demonstrated they are national competitors this year after several days of strong play at the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Oct. 6-9. Vastag, who originally was an alternate in the singles bracket, was named to the qualifying singles draw along with Batty. Batty and McGaffigan also competed in the doubles main draw.
In singles, Vastag won her first-round match over Sacramento State's Cecilia Helland, 7-5, 6-1 before dropping a tough match to Vanderbilt's Taka Bertrand, 7-5, 6-2 in the second round of the qualifying singles draw. Batty dropped a tough, but well-played match to UCLA's Ashley Joelson, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
After claiming the doubles crown of the ITA National Summer Championship, Batty and McGaffigan took the court in the main draw of the All-American doubles tournament. The Hoosiers dropped a hard-fought match to the No. 3 seed of the Riviera/ITA All-American Doubles Championship. Despite being ahead of University of New Mexico's Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic for most of the match, the Hoosier pair did not advance after a 9-7 loss. Despite fighting hard in the consolation bracket of the doubles draw, Batty and McGaffigan fell to tough Florida pair 9-7 after being ahead in the match 7-6.
"We are really pleased with Sarah, Laura and Dora," Indiana associate head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "It was great to see them compete so hard against such great teams."
The Hoosiers take the court next at the ITA Midwest Regionals Oct. 20-25 in East Lansing, Mich.
