STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Indiana women's golf team currently sits in fifth after 18 holes of the 36-hole Lady Lion Invitational, played on the par-72, 6,068-yard Penn State Golf Course. The Hoosiers carded a team score of 308, which trails tournament leader Penn State (301) by seven strokes entering Sunday's final round.
"We are getting better and better," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "This was one of the best rounds of the year because we were fighting high wind gusts throughout the day. The girls played hard and with composure. I like where we are heading into Sunday's final 18 holes. Seven shots is not a lot to make up in tough weather conditions, so I feel good where we are right now."
The Hoosiers are led by sophomore Elaine Harris, who is playing some of the best golf of her collegiate career. The San Francisco, Calif., native fired a 75, and is in eighth place, two shots off a four-way tie for first.
Senior Katie Carlson is just two strokes behind Harris with a 77 on the afternoon and enters the final round in 18th overall. Senior Shannon Johnson and freshman Amber Lindgren are tied for 25th after both shooting a 78, while Tiffany Hockensmith (40th) and Molly Redfearn (t64th), who is competing as an individual, round out the Hoosiers.
Indiana will play its last round of the 2005 campaign on Sunday, Oct. 16, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
