BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Josh Lewis, James Hall and Chris McCombs combined to pitch seven scoreless innings as the Cream blanked the Crimson, 8-0, in the finale of the Indiana baseball Cream and Crimson Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon. Despite the victory, the Crimson squad (coached by assistants Ty Neal and Ted Tom) took two of the three games from the Cream club (led by assistant Micah Nori).
A four-spot in the bottom of the first put the Cream in the drivers seat. Junior shortstop Josh Richardson started the onslaught by doubling home sophomore second baseman David Trager, who opened the inning with a triple. Freshman designated hitter Jason Dew then singled home Richardson for a quick 2-0 lead.
After a pair of outs, sophomore third baseman Arden McWilliams continued the hit parade with a run-scoring double, and freshman right fielder Chris Hervey closed out the rally with a base knock to score McWilliams for a 4-0 lead.
Two more runs crossed in the second, highlighted by an RBI triple from senior left fielder Zach Boswell, and Trager delivered a single to plate freshman center fielder Cameron Satterwhite for a 7-0 lead through three frames.
Lewis retired the Crimson in the top half of the fourth to close the book on his afternoon. The senior right-hander held the Crimson to two hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Cream collected its final run in the bottom of the fourth and watched as Hall and McCombs slammed the door on the shutout. Hall, a freshman righty, pitched 1 1/3 innings, while the sophomore McCombs retired the five batters he faced in succession with two Ks to end the ballgame.
Trager sparked the Cream offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Dew (1-for-4) and senior left fielder Zach Boswell (2-for-4) each added two runs and one RBI, while McWilliams scored once and drove in one.
Appearing in relief for the Crimson, freshman right-hander Eric Wagner tossed the final two innings, setting down the six batters he faced in order.
The scrimmage concluded the Hoosiers' fall season. IU will open its 2006 season in Charlotte with a three-game series against the Charlotte 49ers on Feb. 24-26.
