Fesenko Named IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Oct. 16, senior men's swimmer Sergiy Fesenko garnered the distinction.
"It is a nice accomplishment for Sergiy early in the season," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "He had a wonderful summer and this is an extension of his improvement as both a swimmer and a person."
In a tightly-contested 174-126 loss against defending national champion Auburn, Fesenko dominated the distance events by winning both the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle events. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Fesenko torched the rest of the field by nearly three seconds by touching in 9:17.94. In the 500-yard freestyle, Fesenko turned on the jets in the final 50 yards to finish in 4:30.03 more than a second faster than any other swimmer.
Additionally, the Kiev, Ukraine, native placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.62, before leading off the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay.
Fesenko earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving nominees. The list included sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner (field hockey), redshirt freshman wide receiver James Hardy (football), sophomore diver Christina Loukas (women's swimming and diving), senior midfielder Brian Plotkin (men's soccer) and senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski (women's soccer).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner (field hockey):
Exner, who has started every game for the Hoosiers in goal, recorded a career-high 16 saves against No. 9 Ohio State. Of the Buckeyes 27 shots (17 on goal) Exner allowed only one goal to slip past her.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver James Hardy (football):
Hardy continued his campaign for Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors with 12 catches for 203 yards and a touchdown at Iowa.
Sophomore diver Christina Loukas (women's swimming and diving):
Loukas started off the season with a win on the one-meter and finished behind teammate Lindsay Weigle on the three-meter against Auburn.
Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin (men's soccer):
Plotkin registered five points on the week ending with two goals and one assist as the Hoosiers went 1-0-1 on the road against Wisconsin and Northwestern.
Senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski (women's soccer):
Zmijewski tallied her fifth goal of the season in the victory over Wisconsin on Sunday. Against Northwestern, she notched one shot in the 1-0 defeat. The lone goal over the weekend served as the game winner against Wisconsin.
