BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team, who is coming off of strong play at both the ITA All-American Championship and the Hoosier Classic, are set to compete in the ITA's Midwest Regional Oct. 20-25 in East Lansing, Mich.
"The Regional is the next step in our fall training and competition," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We have had two good tournaments so far and now we will see how we compare to the best players in our region and our conference. I know the girls are excited. I'm excited because we are one of only three teams that the Regional committee gave eight berths to. Not only will we be able to see our top eight singles players but also all four doubles teams."
Competing in the singles main draw are seniors Sarah Batty and Dora Vastag, junior Laura McGaffigan, sophomore Brianna Williams and freshman Alba Berdala. Junior Cecile Perton will be competing in the qualifying singles draw with the strong likelihood of getting in the main draw. Also on the qualifier singles list are freshmen Marah Calvo and Sigrid Fischer.
In doubles, four Hoosier pairs will take the court in the hopes of advancing to the Indoor Championships. ITA All-American participants, Batty and McGaffigan are paired together once again, along with Vastag and Williams, Perton and Berdala, and Calvo and Fischer.
An event that brings the top student-athletes from each region together to determine who competes at the Indoor Championships, the Midwest Regional crowns both a singles and doubles champions. 64 players will compete in the qualifying singles draw, with the top eight advancing to the main draw, where they will join the top 56 players from around the region. The Indoor Championships will be held Nov. 3-6 and hosted by The Ohio State University for the first time. Participants for the second National Championship of the 2005-06 season are determined through this fall's ITA National and Regional Championships and at-large selections will be announced on October 25.
