BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team fell to the Michigan State Spartans today, 1-0, to conclude its Big Ten weekend on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers, who defeated the No.22 Michigan Wolverines on Friday, came out slow against the Spartans who scored early in the first and held on to claim the victory.
"We played poorly in the first half," head coach Mick Lyon said. "To the team's credit, they came out in the second with some courage and played hard. Michigan State just kept us out of our rhythm and were able to hold onto the one goal lead."
The loss drops the Hoosiers to 5-6-1 on the season, 1-3 Big Ten. The Spartans improve to 6-3-3 overall, 2-1 in conference action.
Michigan State had the only strike of the game with an unassisted goal from Breana Ballard in the 43rd minute of action. The action began with a State corner kick that was cleared by the Indiana defenders. The ball found its way back into the box with Ballard notching the mark in the far side of the goal. The goal became the game winner, as the Hoosiers were unable to equalize off 15 shots in the affair.
In goal, senior Lauren Fabbro grabbed two saves in the loss for the Hoosiers, while freshman midfielder Molly Kruger and junior forward Megan Pipkens led IU in shots with four and three, respectively.
Kruger had the Hoosiers' best chance at tying the match halfway through the second period. With a shot from the top of the box, the Carmel, Ind., native took the shot bending it around the State defender, but MSU's goalie Nicole Galas was equal to the task.
The Hoosiers stepped up the pressure in the second half to tally a 10-2 advantage in shots, with Galas grabbing eight saves in the contest, four in the final period.
"It is a frustrating loss at home," Fabbro said. "There are things to learn from today but there is no doubt that we will bounce back and be ready for Ohio State on Friday."
The Hoosiers return to the road as they take on Ohio State on Friday Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Columbus, Ohio.
