Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team found its offense from three different Hoosier jerseys as IU downed Iowa, 3-2, in Bloomington on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium today. Freshman Molly Beckwith sent in the game-winner for her second score of the season.
"There are no easy games in the Big Ten," head coach Mick Lyon said. "I give full credit to Iowa, who battled until the end and played an extremely good game today. For us, it is good to see the freshmen get in on the assists and goals today. We have been searching for goals all season and we found them at the right times today to get the win."
The win moves the Hoosiers to 7-9-1 on the season, 3-6 Big Ten. The Hawkeyes drop to 3-11-4 overall and 1-6-2 in conference action.
IU, who started and ended the game offensive minded, outshot Iowa 14-8 and earned a 7-2 advantage in corners to dominate the visiting Hawkeyes.
Indiana's goals, spread between three different Hoosiers, started with freshman forward Molly Kruger's goal in the 31st minute. Kruger stole the ball away from an Iowa defender at the top of the box before she fired the goal past Iowa goalie Erin MacIsaac.
The Hoosiers settled into the second period with a, 1-0, lead before the Hawkeyes tied the affair in the 56th minute with a goal from freshman midfielder Jackie Kaeding. Kaeding notched the equalizer with a serve from freshman midfielder Manon Engelhardt, who tallied the assist.
Sophomore forward Lindsay McCarthy answered for the Hoosiers in the 68th minute with her first goal of the season. McCarthy took the pass 30 yards out with her defender beat and Iowa's MacIsaac charging out of the goal. The Galloway, N.J., native juked the goalie to earn herself a wide-open goal before she fired the score into the far side of the net.
The Hawkeyes answered as freshman Kelly Warner notched the equalizer to knot the game at two in the 70th minute. Warner headed in the goal off a serve from sophomore midfielder Maltman to send the game into overtime.
Indiana's Molly Beckwith headed in the final score just six minutes into first overtime to give the Hoosiers the victory. McCarthy set-up the play with a cross into the box from the near side of the field. Beckwith finished the play with a header into the right side of the net for the game-winner.
Senior Lauren Fabbro collected three saves in goal, while MacIsaac denied five for the Hawkeyes.
