McCarthy Nabs IU Athlete of the Week Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Oct. 23, sophomore women's soccer forward Lindsay McCarthy garnered the distinction.
"This is a great honor for Lindsay," head coach Mick Lyon said. "She had a tremendous game against Iowa and did some things that do not show up on a stats sheet, but helps win games when it comes down to the end. She tallied a great goal and assist in the match and deserves the honor."
McCarthy garnered the honor after she notched her first goal of the season against Iowa. The Galloway, N.J., native also tallied the assist on the game-winning goal sent in by freshman Molly Beckwith. Overall, the sophomore had three points in the win that puts the Hoosiers into contention for a Big Ten tournament berth.
McCarthy earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving nominees. The list included senior midfielder Kayla Bashore (field hockey), senior middle blocker Mandy Eberle (volleyball) and senior midfielder Brian Plotkin (men's soccer).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior midfielder Kayla Bashore (field hockey):
Bashore scored the Hoosiers only goal in their loss to then-No.11 Iowa. The goal marks the seniors 11th on the season.
Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin (men's soccer):
Plotkin led the Hoosiers to a 1-0-1 record on the week with five points on a goal and three assists. The Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate scored the game-winner in the 32nd minute against Butler on Wednesday and also notched an assist in the victory. Against the Buckeyes, the Lisle, Ill., native assisted on both Hoosier goals, pushing his conference-leading total to nine on the season. The goal against the Bulldogs was his seventh of the season and 20th of his career. On the season, Plotkin leads the Hoosiers with 23 points.
Senior middle blocker Mandy Eberle (volleyball):
Eberle notches honor roll accolade after leading the Indiana volleyball team to a 1-1 weekend as it fell to Purdue, 3-0, before it downed Illinois, 3-2. Eberle paced IU's offensive attack throughout the weekend with an amazing .537 hitting percentage. She placed second on the team with 23 kills for a 2.88 kills per-game average. Additionally, she led IU with 10 blocks for a 1.25 blocks per-game average. Eberle's efforts against Illinois helped the Hoosiers not only hold the Illini to .140 hitting, but also snap a five-match losing streak to Illinois.
