Hoosiers Start Four-Game Road Trip

Bloomington, Ind. - The two-time defending national champion Indiana men's soccer team will begin a four-game road trip with the team's first midweek match of the year at Louisville. No. 11 Indiana will face the Cardinals on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. EDT. The Hoosiers will then travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the Wolverines. The game is slated for 2:30 p.m. EDT, on Oct. 9.
Hoosier News and Notes
- Indiana is ranked No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Michigan is ranked sixth in the region.
- The Hoosiers are 12-0 all-time against Louisville. IU is 5-0 on the road against the Cardinals.
- IU is a perfect 8-0 against Michigan, including a 2-0 mark in Ann Arbor.
- Junior forward Jacob Peterson currently ranks among the Hoosier top 25 in two career categories. He is tied for 23rd on the career goals list with 23 during his three-year career. Peterson needs two goals to move into a tie for 21st. He also is 22nd with 154 career shots. The Portage, Mich., native needs eight more attempts to move into 21st.
- Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin ranks among the IU all-time top 25 in two categories as well. He is tied for 13th in assists with 29 career helpers. With three more assists, he will move into a tie for 11th place with current MLS star Pat Noonan and Pat McGauley. Plotkin ranks 10th on IU's career shots list with 229, trailing ninth place Ryan Mack by 16.
- Senior Mike Ambersley ranks among IU's top 25 in career shots. He is 25th with 135 career attempts and trails 24th place Chad Deering by two shots.
- Peterson recorded his second career hat trick and 48th in the Hoosier annals. Against Boston University on Sept. 11, he notched the first three goals of the match in a 5-0 victory. Peterson became the 10th Hoosier in school history to record multiple hat tricks in a career.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe ranks 16th nationally in goals against average (GAA) at 0.54. He had a career-best seven saves in a victory over Cal State-Northridge on Sept. 16.
- As a team, Indiana ranks seventh nationally in goals per game with 2.67 per contest. IU is eighth in shutout percentage, having blanked six of nine opponents. Indiana is ninth in goals against average (0.51).
- Indiana is averaging 3,439 fans per match at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers have drawn 17,197 total fans in three home matches this season.
Scouting Louisville
The Louisville Cardinals are 3-6-1 overall, including a 1-4-1 mark in the Big East. The Hoosiers and Cardinals have one common opponent in Michigan State. The Hoosiers played to a 0-0 draw with the Spartans, while U of L defeated MSU, 1-0 at the Michigan Tournament.
Despite the 3-6-1 mark, the Cardinals own a 2-1 victory over then-No. 1 (Soccer America) Connecticut in Cardinal Park. Louisville also owns a victory over High Point (2-0) and a tie with Providence (1-1).
Sophomore forward Frank Jonke leads the Cardinals in scoring with nine points on two goals and five assists. Sophomore midfielder David Guzman also is tied for the team lead with two goals. He has a pair of assists as well for six points. Charlie Edwards has started seven matches in goal for the Cardinals with a goals against average of 1.10, 22 saves, a record of 3-3-1 and two shutouts. Senior Steven DeGeorge has started the last three games in goals for U of L with a goals against average of 2.67 and 12 saves.
Indiana is a perfect 12-0 all-time against Louisville. Last season, the Hoosiers defeated the Cardinals, 2-0. IU outshot Louisville, 30-4, and Louisville, Ky., native John Michael Hayden scored the game-winner, bending in a corner kick in the fourth minute.
Scouting Michigan
The Wolverines enter Sunday's match with a 6-3-1 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers and Wolverines have one common opponent in Saint Louis. Michigan fell to the Billikens, 2-1, in St. Louis on Oct. 1, while IU played the SLU to a 1-1 tie at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
Michigan opened Big Ten play with a 1-0 victory over Northwestern. U-M also owns victories over Detroit, Denver, Louisville, Long Island and Kentucky.
Michigan is led in scoring by senior forwards Ryan Alexander and Trai Blanks. Both players have seven points on the season with three goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Adam Bruh leads the Wolverines in assists with three. Senior goalkeeper Peter Dzbay has played every minute in goal for the Wolverines. He has a goals against average of 0.97 with 34 saves and five shutouts.
The Hoosiers are a perfect 8-0-0 all-time against the Wolverines, but the last five meetings between the two squads have been decided by one goal. Last season, IU faced Michigan twice. The Hoosiers defeated the Wolverines, 2-1, during the regular season before downing them, 1-0, in the NCAA Tournament. In the regular season contest, Indiana knocked off then-No. 19 Michigan thanks to second half goals from Brian Plotkin and John Michael Hayden. In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Hoosiers got a late goal in the 87th minute from Kevin Robson.
Hoosiers Drawing Crowds
The Hoosiers drew 4,585 fans for their national television match against Penn State on Sept. 30. The Fox Soccer Channel College Soccer Game of the Week saw the seventh-largest crowd in Armstrong Stadium history enter the gates. It was the largest crowd since 4,726 saw the Hoosiers battle Maryland in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sept. 3, 1999.
The crowd for the Penn State affair marked the third time this season IU has drawn over 4,000 fans. The only other season to accomplish that feat was 1987 when IU had a school-record 6,000 fans attend a Sept. 5 match against SMU, 4,500 fans attend a Sept. 4 match against South Carolina and 4,042 spectators witnessed an NCAA Tournament match on Nov. 22 against Clemson.
The Hoosiers racked up two straight home games with back-to-back attendance of over 4,000 during the 2005 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sept. 2 and 4. It marked the third time in school history that the Hoosiers had back-to-back home matches of over 4,000 and it was the fourth highest two-match total in the school annals. It is also the third-largest two-day total crowd in adidas/IU Credit Union Classic history. Here are the top two-match attended totals in school history:

Freshmen Firsts
A quartet of Hoosier freshmen have registered their first collegiate points. True freshmen Lee Nguyen and Brad Ring along with redshirt freshmen John Mellencamp, Billy Weaver and Kevin Noschang have found the scoring column for the first time in their Hoosier careers.
Nguyen notched his first collegiate point, registering an assist on the eventual game-winner against Cal State-Northridge on Sept. 16. He also scored his first goal in the match. Ring followed suit by scoring his first goal on a bullet from 35 yards in the 68th minute against the Matadors.
Noschang and Weaver notched their first collegiate points at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. Noschang assisted on the equalizer in the early stages of the second half against Saint Louis on Sept. 9. Weaver scored his first career goal, putting in his own rebound in the second half against Boston University on Sept. 11.
Noschang scored the first goal of his Hoosier career against IUPUI. In the match, he notched a pair of goals, including one off an assist from his fellow classmate and former high school teammate Mellencamp.
Hoosiers on TV
Indiana will be on television on four different occasions in 2005. The Hoosiers were on Fox Soccer Channel on Sept. 30 and have dates on Comcast Local, The Comcast Network and ESPNU.
The Hoosiers took part in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) College Soccer Game of the Week television package. The Hoosiers' Sept. 30 tilt with Big Ten rival Penn State on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium was part of the live FSC eight-game Friday night package. Over the past eight years, the Hoosiers are 12-4-1 on television, playing games on FSC, CSTV, ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports Net and CN8: The Comcast Net.
IU's Oct. 9 match with Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., is slated for Comcast Local in Michigan. When the Hoosiers travel to South Bend, Ind., on Oct. 26, to face Notre Dame at Alumni Field, the instate foes' tussle will be televised nationally on ESPNU. The Indiana-Maryland affair on Oct. 30 in College Park, Md., will be shown on CN8: The Comcast Network.
