Bruce and Settle Are Hoosiers' Mascot For A Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Eleven-year-old Jackie Bruce and six-year-old Wes Settle, both of Bloomington, will each serve as Indiana's "Mascot of the Day" for the Hoosiers' Oct. 8 Homecoming game against Illinois. Bruce and Settle will accompany head coach Terry Hoeppner and his team on "The Walk" to "The Rock" - Memorial Stadium and enjoy two free tickets to the game. Bruce will be accompanied by her gymnastics coach, Michael Booher, while Settle will be joined by his father, Greg.
On Sept. 29, Indiana fans were invited to e-mail head coach Hoeppner (football@indiana.edu) as to why their 12-year-old-and under son or daughter should be IU's "mascot of the day" for the Oct. 8 Homecoming game against Illinois. The e-mail should answer the question "What is a Hoosier?"
Hoeppner said that the idea originated during a recent conversation with legendary singer/songwriter John Mellencamp. "John and I were talking about how our fans at the last home game (Sept. 17 vs. Kentucky) were fantastic, and John suggested that we need a mascot and maybe that mascot should be "a young person with high hopes for the future."
Coach Hoeppner received over 100 responses in the last week, and he and his wife, Jane, selected the winning responses for the Illinois game. However, Hoeppner said that the contest will be continued for the Hoosiers' final three home games of the season - Oct. 22 vs. Ohio State, Nov. 5 vs. Minnesota and Nov. 19 vs. Purdue. All responses submitted will be considered throughout the season, and if you have not e-mailed your response, please send it to football@indiana.edu.
Hoeppner also added, "We have an early kick-off against Illinois, so how about Breakfast with the Hoosiers? The WALK is at 9:05 and the kick-off is at 11:10. Come early, stay late and sing the fight song with the team and the band after the game! The weather is supposed to be great, so make this a Homecoming to remember!"
