BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Enoch DeMar's relentless work ethic helped him earn all-league honors as an Indiana offensive lineman, as he started 45 straight games between 1999-2002. He participated in the 2003 Hula Bowl and earned a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns. He made the team and then started 11 of 15 games in 2004.
While DeMar's effort helped him reach the pinnacle of his sport, he knew that he could not rest on his laurels.
"I felt that I had a good off-season and a good camp," DeMar said. "Nonetheless, I ended up getting cut (from the team). "It just goes to show you that you cannot control anything on the field, other than how hard you play. It's how you approach the game that is so important."
DeMar returned the Indiana football complex this week to visit with some of his former teammates and coaches as well as to address the 2005 Hoosiers.
"I called Coach (Terry Hoeppner) and asked him if I could speak to the team," DeMar said. "We need to have more former players involved in the program. A lot of guys do not get it straight. They hear about the NFL from coaches, agents and scouts, but they need to have the players' perspective. You need to keep your mind and heart in the right place. When I was in school, I never talked about the NFL. I just focused on the task ahead, and it paid off for me."
DeMar returned to his hometown, Indianapolis, in late summer to pursue opportunities in real estate and with a production and entertainment company/. DeMar has had the chance to watch the Hoosiers, and he firmly believes that IU is headed in the right direction.
"I am living vicariously through them," DeMar laughed. "I am really impressed with them. They look a lot more confident. I wish them a lot of success."
