Hoosiers Continue Road Trip with Conference Tilt

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The two-time defending national champion Indiana men's soccer team continue its four-game road trip when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. The No. 11 Hoosiers (6-1-3, 0-1-1 in the Big Ten) will face the Wolverines (6-3-1, 1-0 in the Big Ten) at U-M Soccer Field. The game is slated for 2:30 p.m. EDT, on on Sunday, Oct. 9. It will be replayed on Comcast Local in Michigan on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. EDT.
Hoosier News and Notes
- Indiana is ranked No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Michigan is ranked sixth in the region.
- IU is a perfect 8-0 against Michigan, including a 2-0 mark in Ann Arbor.
- Junior forward Jacob Peterson currently ranks among the Hoosier top 25 in two career categories. He is tied for 23rd on the career goals list with 23 during his three-year career. Peterson needs two goals to move into a tie for 21st. He also is 22nd with 158 career shots. The Portage, Mich., native needs four more attempts to move into 21st.
- Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin ranks among the IU all-time top 25 in two categories as well. He is tied for 13th in assists with 29 career helpers. With three more assists, he will move into a tie for 11th place with current MLS star Pat Noonan and Pat McGauley. Plotkin ranks 10th on IU's career shots list with 232, trailing ninth place Ryan Mack by 13.
- Senior Mike Ambersley ranks among IU's top 25 in career shots. He is tied for 24th with 137 career attempts with Chad Deering. He trails Rodrigo Castro, who is 22nd, by eight shots.
- Peterson recorded his second career hat trick and 48th in the Hoosier annals. Against Boston University on Sept. 11, he notched the first three goals of the match in a 5-0 victory. Peterson became the 10th Hoosier in school history to record multiple hat tricks in a career.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe ranks 16th nationally in goals against average (GAA) as of Oct. 2. He has a GAA of 0.49, following his fifth shutout of the season against Louisville. Munroe had a career-best seven saves in a victory over Cal State-Northridge on Sept. 16.
- As a team (as of Oct. 2), Indiana ranks seventh nationally in goals per game with 2.67 per contest. IU is eighth in shutout percentage, having blanked six of nine opponents. Indiana is ninth in goals against average.
- Indiana is averaging 3,439 fans per match at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers have drawn 17,197 total fans in three home matches this season.
Scouting Michigan
The Wolverines enter Sunday's match with a 6-3-1 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers and Wolverines have one common opponent in Saint Louis. Michigan fell to the Billikens, 2-1, in St. Louis on Oct. 1, while IU played the SLU to a 1-1 tie at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
Michigan opened Big Ten play with a 1-0 victory over Northwestern. U-M also owns victories over Detroit, Denver, Louisville, Long Island and Kentucky.
Michigan is led in scoring by senior forwards Ryan Alexander and Trai Blanks. Both players have seven points on the season with three goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Adam Bruh leads the Wolverines in assists with three. Senior goalkeeper Peter Dzubay has played every minute in goal for the Wolverines. He has a goals against average of 0.97 with 34 saves and five shutouts.
The Hoosiers are a perfect 8-0-0 all-time against the Wolverines, but the last five meetings between the two squads have been decided by one goal. Last season, IU faced Michigan twice. The Hoosiers defeated the Wolverines, 2-1, during the regular season before downing them, 1-0, in the NCAA Tournament. In the regular season contest, Indiana knocked off then-No. 19 Michigan thanks to second half goals from Brian Plotkin and John Michael Hayden. In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Hoosiers got a late goal in the 87th minute from Kevin Robson.
Tudela Stepping up the Scoring
Junior midfielder Josh Tudela entered the 2005 campaign, having not registered a goal during the regular season in his Hoosier career. In fact, eight of his 14 career points, including both his career goals, came during the NCAA Tournament runs each of the last two seasons. He played a vital role in the national title runs, but he would have been better described as a quiet contributor with a knack for being around the ball.
The don of a year new brings about a change in the numbers and the play. Following his two-goal outburst against Louisville, the Evansville, Ind., native ranks third on the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists. From his central midfield position, Tudela has remained a key component in starting the Hoosier offense, but he has added the scoring flair as well.
Tudela notch his first goal of the season in just the Hoosiers' second match, a 4-0 victory over then-No. 7 SMU. He notched the game-winner heading in a corner kick against then-No. 25 Cal State-Northridge at the Oregon State Diadora Classic. The goal started a Hoosier onslaught of five second-half goals. Then against the Cardinals, he notched both Hoosier goals, including the game-winner in the 19th minute.
Hoosiers Drawing Crowds
The Hoosiers drew 4,585 fans for their national television match against Penn State on Sept. 30. The Fox Soccer Channel College Soccer Game of the Week saw the seventh-largest crowd in Armstrong Stadium history enter the gates. It was the largest crowd since 4,726 saw the Hoosiers battle Maryland in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sept. 3, 1999.
The crowd for the Penn State affair marked the third time this season IU has drawn over 4,000 fans. The only other season to accomplish that feat was 1987 when IU had a school-record 6,000 fans attend a Sept. 5 match against SMU, 4,500 fans attend a Sept. 4 match against South Carolina and 4,042 spectators witnessed an NCAA Tournament match on Nov. 22 against Clemson.
The Hoosiers racked up two straight home games with back-to-back attendance of over 4,000 during the 2005 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sept. 2 and 4. It marked the third time in school history that the Hoosiers had back-to-back home matches of over 4,000 and it was the fourth highest two-match total in the school annals. It is also the third-largest two-day total crowd in adidas/IU Credit Union Classic history. Here are the top two-match attended totals in school history:
