BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team concludes their fall season this weekend in Kalamazoo, Mich., at the Western Michigan Duals Nov. 4-6. Nine Hoosiers will take part in the hidden dual formatted tournament. IU will face two Big Ten opponents in Purdue and Northwestern, while Kansas, DePaul and Western Michigan round out the field.
Seniors Sarah Batty and Dora Vastag, juniors Laura McGaffigan and Cecile Perton, sophomore Brianna Williams and freshmen Alba Berdala, Marah Calvo, Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller will compete against some of the nation's best in the weekend long tournament.
"This will be a great way to finish the fall," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We will play "hidden duals" which will give our freshmen a chance to experience what a dual match in the spring is all about."
Batty boasts a 5-3 singles record for the fall, including one win over Northwestern's Nazlie Ghazal at the Regionals. McGaffigan, who defeated Kansas' Christine Skoda convincingly at the Hoosier Classic, has notched an impressive 4-1 record so far. Perton enters the Western Michigan Duals with a 3-2 record with three wins over opponents that will compete in the Duals this weekend. Williams is 3-2 in singles play thus far, while Berdala boasts a 7-1 record including a flight A tournament win earlier this fall at Western Michigan's Bronco Invitational. Calvo has recorded a pair of wins in the fall, and fellow-freshman Fischer is 7-4 in her fist campaign. Fischer has registered wins over both a Western Michigan and a Kansas opponent. Heller rounds out the Hoosier line-up at the event with a 5-2 mark, including a win over Kansas' Ashley Filberth at the Hoosier Classic.
