BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's basketball team closed the exhibition season strong with a convincing 96-49 win over in-state foe Indianapolis on Thursday night. Led by seniors Marco Killingsworth and Marshall Strickland's double-digit scoring, the Hoosiers notched their second preseason win. For the night, IU hauled 51 rebounds and shot 55.7 percent from the field, including blistering the nets for 67.6 percent in the opening half.
Killingsworth finished the contest with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. Strickland finished with 15 on the night, including hitting 3-of-4 shots from behind the arc. Freshmen Ben Allen and Joey Shaw also reached double figures, contributing 13 and 11 points, respectively. Junior Earl Calloway was the catalyst on the offensive side of the ball, collecting 10 assists without a turnover. As a team, the Hoosiers had 26 helpers on the evening.
In commanding fashion, Killingsworth opened the game with a slam dunk to start a 12-0 run for IU. The Greyhounds didn't put points on the board until the 14:32 mark when sophomore Reed Ludlow drove inside to make the shot and draw the foul. Ludlow converted on the three-point play to end the Hoosier run and put Indianapolis on the board, 12-3.
In a display of sharp ball movement and precision shooting from beyond the arc (4-of-6), the Hoosiers extended their lead to 22-7 with 11 minutes left to go in the first half.
The Hoosiers built their lead to its largest of the contest at 37, entering the locker room with a 56-19 advantage. The IU defense held the Greyhounds to a 19.4 field-goal percentage and just 3-of-18 from behind the three-point line. Killingsworth alone outscored the Greyhounds in the first half netting 20 points for the Hoosiers.
The opening minutes of the second half saw the Hoosiers and Greyhounds trade baskets until senior Sean Kline sparked IU with a block on Indianapolis' Jon LaBad at the 17:15 mark. Senior Lewis Monroe pushed the ball up the court and dished it to sophomore Robert Vaden who hit a three-pointer from the corner, to build the advantage to 38 points, 61-23.
Indiana proved how deep of a team it is by scoring 42 points off the bench. The Hoosiers also outscored the Greyhounds, 44-14 in the paint, while also piling up 30 fast-break points compared to just five for Indianapolis.
Indiana will next take on Nicholls State on Nov. 18 for its season opener. The game will be televised by EPSN-Plus, with tip off set for 6 p.m. EST.
