Four Hoosiers Receive Academic All-District V Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana safeties Will Lumpkin and Will Meyers, defensive tackle Russ Richardson and running back Yamar Washington earned selections to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V football team, the organization announced. Indiana, Minnesota and Southern Illinois represent the only schools in the district to net four honorees on the squad.
Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner is proud of this quartet's accomplishments on the field and particularly in the classroom.
"I tell our players that going to class is their job and if they are successful at their job, then they get to play football," Hoeppner said. "This is a tremendous honor for each of these four players, a credit to a lot of hard work throughout their college careers."
Meyers is making his second straight appearance on the All-District V team. On the field, the safety has been one of the most consistent players on the defensive side of the ball. Over the last four contests, Meyers has 50 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, an interception and a fumble recovery.
During the stretch, the junior has moved into a share of the team lead with 66 tackles and holds the top spot with 51 solo stops. Meyers also is tied for 15th in the Big Ten in total tackles. Meyers is an accounting major.
Lumpkin, Richardson and Washington each secured their first selections to All-District V team. Lumpkin, a three-time All-Big Ten selection was named an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar by the journal Black Issues in Higher Education earlier this season.
The senior safety has appeared in all nine of the Hoosiers' contests this season with three starts and sits eighth on the team with 28 tackles and 21 solo stops. Against Michigan State on Oct. 29, Lumpkin recorded a team-high 10 tackles (7 solo), his best performance of the campaign and the second-highest total of his career. Lumpkin is a finance major.
Richardson has started eight games and played in nine in 2005. During his career, the senior defensive tackle has taken the field in 43 of Indiana's 44 contest. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Richardson owns three tackles for loss this year. Richardson is a telecommunications major.
Along with Lumpkin, Washington also was named an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar. The two-time All-Big Ten selection has raced for 386 yards and one score on the year. He picked up his fourth-career 100-yard game after garnering 108 yards on 20 carries in the team's season-opening victory at Central Michigan on Sept. 2. Washington is a liberal arts and management major.
