Hoosiers Drop Match to Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana volleyball team opened its four-match road trip with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-25) loss to Michigan at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Nov. 11. The Hoosiers fell to 9-18 (2-13 Big Ten) on the season with the defeat.
Individually, freshman Erica Short paced the Hoosiers with 14 kills, while classmate Laura Holm recorded 20 assists and fellow setter Jessica Batliner notched 11 assists of her own. Additionally, junior libero Sara Diehl posted 13 digs.
Notably, senior middle blocker Mandy Eberle registered a block assist to tie Melissa Rooney for 10th-place on IU's record list with 230 career block assists.
In the opening frame of the contest, IU jumped out to an early 8-5 lead before Michigan battled back with a 5-1 run to counter for a 10-9 advantage. After the two squads traded kills until the match stood at 14-14, the Wolverines went on a 13-3 run to take a 27-17 lead. The Hoosiers responded by posting five more points, but were in too deep of a hole as Michigan closed out the game, 30-22, to take a 1-0 match advantage.
The second stanza proved to be all Michigan as the Wolverines recorded a .400 hitting percentage to take the game 30-18 and jump out to a 2-0 match lead. The Hoosiers held tough in the initial stages of the frame until the score stood at 7-5 Michigan. The Wolverines then went on a 4-0 run to open up an 11-5 lead. Indiana countered to cut the gap to 18-15. Unfortunately, the Wolverines rang off another 4-0 streak to jump out to a 22-15 advantage.
In an exciting third game, the Hoosiers blasted out of the locker room after intermission to take a 5-3 lead. The Wolverines withstood the initial rush by the Hoosiers to take a 10-9 lead with a 4-0 run when IU led 9-6. The teams then traded the lead four times along with eight ties until Michigan stepped out to a 20-18 advantage for the first two-point lead by either team since the Wolverines led by 12-10. After a timely timeout, the Hoosiers responded to square the game at 20-20. Unfortunately, Michigan countered to take a 24-20 advantage. The Wolverines then closed out the game 30-25 for a 3-0 victory.
