BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After finishing last year with a mark of 24-10 and making its way to the CWPA Eastern Championships, the Indiana water polo team will look to continue its success during the 2006 campaign.
Last year became a memorable one for the Hoosiers as they won at least 20 matches for the fourth straight season. IU went unbeaten in conference play (7-0), a feat that had not been accomplished since 2001. Additionally, Indiana had four players take home all-division honors from the CWPA. Former Hoosiers Krista Peterson, Kandace Waldthaler, Carolyn Conway and Jessica Goldner were each honored with all-division accolades.
This season, the Hoosiers return 11 players and add nine newcomers to a team that spent 14 of 15 weeks in the top 10 last year. Indiana also took home its first regular season division title and finished the season ranked 10th in the country.
The 2006 squad is strong at a number of positions, most notably attacker. Senior Janis Pardy (30 goals and 39 assists in 2005) and junior Kristin Zernicke (19 goals and 34 assists in 2005) will lead the attacker position for the Hoosiers, while sophomore Linda Calvert will take on the role of center. Senior Claire Meadows will anchor the defense and sophomore Jackie Pyrz will make her debut in goal.
Over the next week, IUHOOSIERS.com will take an in-depth look at the Indiana water polo program for the upcoming 2006 season. Here is a look at the schedule:
