BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the graduation of last year's goalie, Jessica Goldner, the Hoosiers will have a new face between the pipes in 2006. Sophomore Jackie Pyrz comes out of her freshmen year after having the opportunity to learn from Goldner, who head coach Barry King calls, "the best goalkeeper we have had during the Indiana Water Polo history."
In 2005, Pyrz posted an impressive 3.72 goals against average in 166 minutes of work. In 15 matches, Pyrz came up with 52 saves and only allowed 22 goals. Coming out of high school in 2004, Pyrz was named a National Interschollastic Coaches Association (NISCA) High School All-American.
"Jackie will be the stalwart of a defense that has a fairly good reputation (throughout the country)," King said. "I expect Jackie to pick up where Goldner left off after having the opportunity to learn from her last year."
In addition to Pyrz, Indiana will welcome freshman goalkeeper Sarah Larson to the squad. Larson comes to the Hoosiers from Houston, Texas, where she was a first team selection to the 2005 NISCA/Speedo Girls All-America Team. Larson also was named to the first team all-state team in Texas during both her junior and senior years of high school.
"Sarah will benefit from a lot of practice time. We will look for her to develop into a position where she can take some minutes and give Jackie some rest when she needs it," King said.
