BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Hoosiers finished the season 4-7 with a 41-14 loss to Purdue on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Memorial Stadium. Led by sophomore quarterback Blake Powers' two rushing touchdowns, costly turnovers and an explosive Purdue offense kept the Old Oaken Bucket in West Lafayette, Ind., for another year.
The Hoosier defense came out strong on the first two Purdue series, forcing the Boilermakers to punt the ball away both times to set up a first quarter Indiana lead. Following a pair of first down runs by senior running back Chris Taylor, Powers found his way nine yards into the end zone to give the Hoosiers a 7-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
After a Boilermaker field goal made the score 7-3 early in the second quarter, senior defensive back Will Lumpkin picked off his first interception of the season and the second of his career when he snagged Curtis Painter's pass. The ball returned to the Boilermakers' hands on the very next play to set up a Purdue touchdown and a 10-7 advantage. Running back Kory Sheets took the ball 25 yards for the Boilermaker's first lead of the game with 12:16 remaining.
An interception at Indiana's 35-yard line by Brent Grover set up another Purdue score. It was again Sheets who powered his way five yards into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game to give the Boilermakers a 17-7 lead.
With 5:17 remaining in the half, Purdue's Bernard Pollard forced yet another fumble. Two plays later, Dorien Bryant took the handoff from Painter to raise the advantage to 24-7. To conclude the half, Purdue's Jones added to the Boilermaker lead with a 31-yard field goal.
Down 27-7 entering the second half, the Hoosiers took over on offense to begin the third quarter. Powers found freshman Brandon Walker-Roby on a screen pass for a first down before hitting sophomore James Hardy to send the Hoosiers into Purdue territory. The Hoosiers' offensive drive was halted once again when Pollard snagged an interception for his second turnover of the game.
After two goal line stops, Bryant put the ball in the end zone off a one-yard rush to secure a 34-7 lead and his second touchdown of the game to wrap up the third period of play/
With 12:40 left in the game, Powers hit Thigpen on a 43-yard pass to put the Hoosiers on Purdue's 15-yard line. After a four-yard gain by Washington, Powers ran the remaining seven yards for his second rushing score of the game and his fourth this season to cut the Purdue lead to 20.
Sheets registered his third touchdown of the game on Purdue's next set of downs. He ran for a 53-yard TD with 8:13 remaining in the game to close out the scoring.
