ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski and freshman forward Molly Kruger grabbed Big Ten honors at the annual tournament banquet in Ann Arbor tonight. The annual banquet recognized the years All-Big Ten first and second teams, freshman team and Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year and Coach of the Year.
Zmijewski nabbed first team All-Big Ten honors as she leads IU in goals and points with six and 14, respectively. The senior has led the Hoosiers to a 7-9-2 overall and 3-6-1 record in the Big Ten and gave the Hoosiers their third straight appearance on the first team (Kim Grodek, 2003, 2004). The Aurora, Ill., native has tallied one game-winner this season and scored the Hoosiers' loan goal in its tie against Purdue in the final regular season match that propelled Indiana into the conference tournament. Zmijewski is also Indiana's recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, an honor given by the Big Ten to a member of each of the conference's 11 participating teams. The midfielder is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
Kruger tallied All-Freshman team honors, which marks the third straight year and the third freshman in program history to be named to the Big Ten's top-freshman squad (Beverly Markwort, 2004; Megan Pipkens, 2003). Kruger leads the Hoosiers in assists (3), shots (54) and shots on goal (23) and is second on the squad in goals (3) and points (9).
Penn State's Tiffany Weimer and head coach Paula Wilkins took Offensive and Coach of the Year honors, while Illinois' Christen Karniski and State's Lindsay Bach shared Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Wilkins earn her third straight accolade as the conference's top coach,
The Hoosiers will get down to business tomorrow as they open the Big Ten Tournament against Michigan State at 10:30 a.m., at Varsity Field.
