The Indiana Hoosiers (0-2) will look to claim their sixth-straight home tournament title this weekend, Nov. 25-26 when they host the Hampton Inn Classic at Assembly Hall. Bowling Green (2-0) and IUPUI (0-2) will square off in the first game on Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by Indiana vs. Youngstown State (1-1) at 7 p.m.. The loser of each game will play in the consolation game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and the championship game is slated for 7 p.m.
SCOUTING YOUNGSTOWN STATE
Youngstown State is 1-1 on the year after falling to Robert Morris, 68-60 on Friday, Nov. 18 and defeating Ohio University, 69-59, on Tuesday, Nov. 22.The Penguins finished the 2004-05 season with an overall record of 12-16.
Senior Michelle Holmes is the leading scorer (12.5 ppg) for Youngstown State. She finished with nine points and five rebounds in Tuesday's win over the Bobcats. Jessica Schloemp contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
A 1993 alumni of Indiana University, head coach Tisha Hill is in her third season at the helm of the Youngstown State program. A native of University Heights, Ohio, Hill currently holds IU school records in assists (533) and steals (210). Hill, who owns a record of 16-41 with the Penguins, had assistant coaching stints at Ball State (2001-2003), Virginia Tech (1997-2001), UW-Green Bay (1995-1997) and Indiana (1993-95) prior to becoming a head coach.
SCOUTING BOWLING GREEN
The 2005 Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions, Bowling Green is 2-0 on the year after defeating IPFW, 78-50, on Friday, Nov. 18 and . St. Francis (Pa.), 77-55 on Monday, Nov. 21 Bowling Green finished the season 22-8 in 2005 after being knocked out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Kansas State.
The Falcons have a strong experienced crew back from 2004-05, including junior Liz Honegger, who was the lone Falcon to start all 31 games last season and led the team in scoring (14.5), rebounding (8.1) and blocked shots (1.6). Also leading the charge is junior Ali Mann, a preseason All-MAC Team selection for the second consecutive year and sophomore Kate Achter, who was a member of the MAC's All-Freshman Team and earned MVP of the 2005 Kraft MAC Tournament after helping the Falcons to the title. Mann is averaging 17.5 ppg, while Honegger and Amber Flynn are putting up 11.5 and 10.0 ppg, respectively.
Curt Miller is in his fifth season at the helm of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball program and has an overall record of 67-53 and a MAC ledger of 35-29. Miller joined the Falcons after spending three years as the associate head coach at Colorado State University. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Syracuse University and Cleveland State University.
SCOUTING IUPUI
IUPUI is 0-2 on the season after falling to Kentucky in its season-opener on Friday, Nov. 18, 81-52 and Iowa State, 70-55, on Sunday, Nov. 20. The Jaguars wrapped up the 2004-05 season with a ledger of 7-21 and finished eighth in the Mid-Continent Conference.
Senior Kia Hayes is IUPUI's returning leading scorer, as she averaged 10.7 points to go along with 3.7 rebounds last season. Classmate Brooke MCafee averaged 9.6 points per game and a team-high 5.8 rebounds in 2004-05. Hayes led the team in scoring on Friday with 15 points, while freshman Brittany Mingo had a game-high 21 points on Sunday.
Shann Hart is in her second season as head coach of the IUPUI women's basketball team. In her inaugural campaign, she directed the Jaguars to a 7-21 mark and eighth place finish in the Mid-Con standings. IUPUI's 5-11 league record last year was a one-game improvement from the year before. Hart came to IUPUI from American University where she led the Eagles' women's basketball program to a remarkable turnaround. In just three years, she turned a team that went 4-23 her first season to one that went 18-11 during her third campaign.
DOUBLE UP
When senior Jenny DeMuth (20 points, 11 rebounds), and freshman Whitney Thomas ( 14 points, 12 rebounds) notched double-doubles against then-No. 13/15 Notre Dame, it marked the first time since the 2002-03 season that two Hoosiers contributed double-doubles. Ironically, DeMuth (15 points, 11 rebounds) was part of that along with senior Angela Hawkins (10 points, 13 rebounds). The feat happened on Nov. 26, 2002 against Eastern Kentucky.
FRESHMAN SENSATION
Freshman forward Whitney Thomas has not let first-game jitters get to her in IU's opening games. Most recently, she recorded a double-double of 14 points, 12 rebounds against the Notre Dame on Nov. 23 and, despite fouling out with 10 minutes left in the game against Baylor, Thomas still managed to be productive, scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds. The Bloomington, Ind., native has started in both of IU's games this season and has the potential to break some freshman school records.
