BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over the 2005-06 campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana swimmers and divers to see where life has taken them after graduating from IU. Steven Gombai, who swam for IU in 1990-93, took the time to fill in IUHOOSIERS.com on his life since graduation.
What have you been doing since graduating from Indiana University?
I have been teaching High School Sciences in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. I also have been coaching swimming both at the high school and club level. I married in 2002 (Nicole Gombai) and now have two-and-a-half year-old twin girls Trista and Natasha and six-week old Lilly.
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a Hoosier?
I enjoyed swimming for the GREAT Doc Counsilman and the training camp in Hawaii. I relish the friendships that I formed while at IU. I cherish my victories in and out of the pool.
What piece of advice would you give to any current Hoosier?
Enjoy every minute, get involved with anything/everything that you can (go see the shows, the games, the concerts, the parties, etc.)
Would you say that being a student-athlete at Indiana University has helped you get to where you are today?
YES!!! Being involved with the IU Swimming Program has given me confidence to tackle any and all tasks presented before me in my life (work, coaching, parenting). I took the drive and determination required of a successful student-athlete and put it into all the other aspects of my life.
