IOWA CITY, Iowa - Despite a determined effort, the Indiana field hockey team fell short of their first Big Ten Championship title to the Michigan Wolverines, 3-0 on Sunday at Iowa's Grant Field. Seniors Mallory Reabold and Morgan Albini were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Wolverines jumped out to the early lead when Michigan's Erin Dallas rebounded her own shot for a goal one minute and 29 seconds into the game after driving to the center of the circle off a steal. The Hoosiers were able to draw two penalty corners, but were unable to convert either into scores. At 16:30, senior Big Ten Player of the Year Kayla Bashore drew the second corner of the game, took the shot from the far left side, but her shot missed by an inch as it hit the post.
13 minutes into the game, the Wolverines were able to get inside the circle and draw their first corner of the game. This time, Lucia Belassi tipped the ball in for the 2-0 lead. Three minutes remaining in the half, senior Nikki Orciuch got an open look at goal, but her shot sailed wide right. With less than a minute left in the half, UM's Mary Fox maneuvered her way around Hoosier defenders for the 3-0 lead at the half.
The relentless Hoosiers opened the second period determined and maintained possession. Minutes into the second half, senior Mallory Reabold drew the corner. Bashore took her second shot of the day from the center of the circle, but the ball was saved by Michigan goalkeeper Beth Riley. Junior Morgan Miller and senior Lesley Wiler experienced the same results on the next two corner attempts.
After Michigan's Mary Fox was accessed a yellow card, Reabold drew the corner but Bashore's shot from the top of the circle was once again saved.
The Hoosiers drew their eighth corner of the game when Bashore was dribbling closer to the goal. Despite taking two solid shots, Indiana still could not manage to get on the board, and the Wolverines walked away with their second championship in three years.
Sunday's championship game will be televised on tape delay on Tuesday, Nov. 8 on CSTV at 6 p.m.
