IU Diving Snares Piercy

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber and the Indiana diving team announced the signing of David Piercy (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) for the 2006-07 academic year.
"We are really fortunate to have David Piercy be a part of our team next year," Huber said. "He has all the characteristics I look for in a recruit that correlate with future success. Besides being physically talented, he is a good student, hard working, coachable and wants to reach his greatest diving potential and believes IU is the place to do that. His best diving is ahead of him and I am eagerly looking forward to working with him in the future."
A first team high school All-American, Piercy finished first on the three-meter and second on the one-meter at the 2004 junior Olympic regional meet. Additionally, Piercy qualified for the state championships from 2003-05 and took eighth at state in 2004 and 12th in 2003. Meanwhile, Piercy garnered all-conference accolades from 2004-05. A four-year letterwinner, Piercy paced Homestead to a runner-up finish at state in 2004, up from 32nd-place in 2003. He also helped HHS to a trio of sectional titles from 2003-05. As a member of the Northern Indiana Diving club under current IU assistant coach Todd Waikel, Piercy participated in five winter national and two summer national competitions.
"I have had the opportunity to work with David for the past several years," Waikel said. "Along with his natural ability, David's leadership skills and desire to succeed are that of a champion. Jeff and I are both very pleased and eager to have the opportunity to coach David here at IU. He is a wonderful person with much talent and will be a big asset to the team."
Away from the pool, the son of Shirley and Dave Piercy earned Mathematics Honors in 2004-05 and participates in church activities. Notably, his sister Amber is a member of the Western Illinois University Westerwind swim team.
"I chose Indiana because of its academics," Piercy said. "IU also has a great team, and it will be an honor to dive under the direction of 2000 and 2004 Olympic coach Dr. Jeff Huber."
