Along with head coach Tracy Smith and assistant coaches Ty Neal and Micah Nori, the Indiana baseball team also welcomes 12 new players to the 2006 roster. In the coming weeks, IUHOOSIERS.com will feature each IU newcomer. After pitcher Joe Vicini took his turn in the spotlight, outfielder Chris Hervey is up next.
Hervey secured All-Long Island, all-state and all-county honors his senior season at Smithtown High School in St. James, N.Y., as well as being named a Gold Glove award winner and the team's Most Valuable Player. As a senior, Hervey batted .438 with five home runs, 36 runs, nine doubles, one triple and 14 stolen bases, which contributed to him setting the school career stolen base record with 42.
The 6-1, 175-pounder was a three-time all-league member and guided Smithtown to three league championships, three county finals and one county championship. Hervey played football, where he was named all-county and team MVP while setting the school's single-season interception record with seven. He also ran track, where he was an all-league hurdler.
The son of Craig and Denise Hervey has two brothers, Brian and Matthew. Hervey plans to study physical education at IU.
