BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Dec. 18, sophomore wrestler Marc Bennett garnered the distinction.
Bennett helped lead the Hoosiers to a perfect 3-0 record at the FITE Duals in Park Forrest, Ill. Indiana quickly disposed of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 28-9, before taking on 21st-ranked Northern Illinois. IU never trailed in the dual and easily handed the Huskies a 28-9 defeat. To finish off the weekend, the Hoosiers disposed of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 45-4.
Bennett's individual efforts included sweeping the competition at 174 pounds in commanding fashion. The Martinsville, Ind., native dismissed Southern Illinois-Edwardsville's Chris Midgett (2:30) and Wisconsin-Whitewater's Scott Moe (3:32) by fall. Against NIU's 19th-ranked Danny Burke, Bennett needed extra periods before using a takedown to defeat Burke 9-7 in the first overtime period. The sophomore's win marked his first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
On the year, Bennett has posted four falls and two major decisions and is 1-2 against ranked opponents. Bennett has tallied 18 dual points, a 4-1 dual record and moved to 8-4 overall on the season.
Bennett earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor and is recognized along with freshman forward Whitney Thomas of women's basketball in this week's Hoosier honor roll.
