IUHOOSIERS.com sat down head coach Stacey Phillips of the Indiana softball team to get an in depth look at this St. Clair Shores, Mich., product on- and off-the-field. Here is what Phillips had to tell IUHOOSIERS.com about everything from coaching and her expectations here at Indiana, to her favorite food.
Name: Stacey Phillips
Names of brother and Sisters: Brother, John and the former Erin Gladstone (Sister-in-law)
Names of Parents: Dave and Paula Phillips. My dad played baseball at Ferris State.
List Sports played: Softball for about 22 years while I also played basketball for about 10. I also lettered all fours years in high school in volleyball, softball and basketball and earned four letters in college in softball.
Nickname: Philly
Favorite T.V. show: CSI
CD currently in your CD player: Madonna
Possession you can't live without: Chapstick
Hardest place to play in the Big Ten: Minnesota, because it is so cold there!
Opponent on the 2005-06 schedule I am most looking forward to playing: Whoever we play in the Big Ten Tournament.
Pregame rituals: Drink a lot of black coffee.
Favorite food: Steak
If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why? IU women's basketball head coach Sharon Versyp because I love basketball.
Some of my goals during the 2005-06 season are... To rebuild this program and to reach the Big Ten Tournament.
Being a part of the IU softball program has changed my life because... I have had the chance to remold a gold mine.
• Phillips Biography •
Stacey Phillips, who served as interim head coach in 2005, has taken the reigns of the Hoosier softball team as head coach for 2006.
Phillips enters her third year overall with the IU program, serving her first year as an assistant coach.
One of the top players in the history of the Michigan State softball program, where she played from 1996-00, Phillips took the assistant coaching position at IU in June of 2004.
Before that, Phillips served as an assistant softball coach at the University of Detroit-Mercy, where she primarily worked as the Titans' hitting coach. She also assisted the Titans' infielders and outfielders, was involved in scouting opponents, and assisting with recruiting during the 2002-03 seasons.
"This team has a lot of talent," Phillips said. "I am thrilled to have been asked to lead them in their direction of success."
The St. Clair Shores, Mich., product captained the Spartans as a senior, a season that saw her earn first team All-Big Ten honors at first base. During her freshman through junior campaigns, she was a second team All-Big Ten pick at both first base and shortstop. She also helped lead the Spartans to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1997 and 1999.
In addition to her all-conference accolades, Phillips was recognized as a third team All-America shortstop as a sophomore, and was an All-Region selection sophomore and senior seasons.
Phillips' name can be found throughout the Michigan State softball record book, as she left still holds the MSU record for single-season and career home runs with 13 and 31, respectively. Phillips also holds the school record for career RBI with 141.
At the conclusion of her collegiate career in 2000, she was the 23rd overall selection of the Tampa Bay Firestix in the Pro Softball Draft. In 2004, she was the No. 1 pick of the San Antonio Armadillo's of the National Pro Fastpitch League.
Phillips received a bachelor's degree from Michigan State in audiology speech sciences.
