Indiana Athletics Remembers Chuck Peters

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Charles "Chuck" Peters, a former Indiana University track and field standout and one of the Hoosiers' most generous supporters, passed away on Dec. 21.
Peters, a retired high school biology teacher and track coach at Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Ill., graduated from Indiana University in 1950. The two-time All-American stands as one of IU's all-time top sprinters. During his illustrious career as a Hoosier, Peters claimed seven Big Ten championships and was a three-time outdoor 100-yard and 220-yard conference champion from 1948-50. To date, Peters is the only athlete to win a league crown in two events three years in a row. In 1947, Peters was an NCAA runner-up in the 220-yard dash. At the conclusion of his final season, Peters finished third in the balloting for the Sullivan Award, a distinction given annually to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the country.
Peters was inducted into the Indiana Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the I-Men's Zora G. Clevenger Award in 1992 for his years of service to the University. A past vice president of the I-Men's Board, Peters unselfishly supported IU's track and field programs.
