Hoosiers Face Road Test At In State Rival Indiana State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 16/18 (Coaches/AP) Indiana (4-1) men's basketball team will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to face undefeated in-state rival Indiana State (3-0). This will mark the second meeting in two years between the two schools, with the Hoosiers taking a 56-52 victory in Bloomington on Nov. 23, 2004.
The Hoosiers are coming off a hard-fought 79-63 victory at home against Eastern Michigan. IU was led by sophomore guard Robert Vaden's 18 points and seven assists. Indiana State moved to 3-0 on the campaign with a 66-58 win on the road over Eastern Illinois. The Sycamores were paced in the win by David Moss who scored 24 points and added seven rebounds and four assists.
On The Air
The Indiana-Indiana State game will be televised on ESPN Plus, with Jim Barbar (play-by-play) and John Laskowski (color commentary) on the call. Additionally, all of Indiana's games can be heard live on the IU Radio Network. WHCC (105.1 FM in Bloomington) is the flagship station for the network that has more than 50 stations broadcasting Hoosier basketball. Don Fischer (play-by-play), former Indiana guard Todd Leary (color commentary) and Joe Smith (pregame, halftime and postgame host) call all of the action.
Scouting Indiana State
Indiana State enters Tuesday night's contest with a 3-0 record. After opening the season with two home wins, the Sycamores travelled to Eastern Illinois on Dec. 3, and pulled out a 66-58 victory.
ISU is led by senior guard David Moss, who enters Tuesday's contest leading the squad with 24.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. Freshman forward/ center Jay Tunnell is the only other Sycamore to average double figures, with 12.7 ppg. Junior forward Trent Wurtz leads ISU in rebounds at 6.7 per contest.
Indiana State head coach Royce Waltman is in his ninth season at the helm of the Sycamore program. The 1999-2000 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year has compiled and overall record of 111-130. Waltman was an assistant at Indiana from 1982-87.
The Indiana State Series
The clash between Indiana State and Indiana will mark the 21st meeting between the foes. The Hoosiers own an all-time advantage of 16-4, but it is the Sycamores who have reeled off victories in two of the last three contests. Additionally, Indiana holds a record of 5-2 in the contests decided in Terre Haute. In its last trip to Indiana State, IU fell, 59-58, on Nov. 29, 2000.
Indiana State Last Time Out
Indiana State remained unbeaten on the season after a 66-58 win over the Eastern Illinois Panthers on the road.
The Sycamores were paced in the win by David Moss who scored 24 points and added seven rebounds and four assists. The senior also had game-high of three steals while shooting 10-16 from the field.
ISU had two other players in double figures, including Jay Tunnell with 12 and Tyson Schnitker with 10. Indiana State finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 76 percent from the free throw line. Eastern Illinois was behind in both categories, hitting 41 percent of their baskets and 71 percent from the charity stripe.
Indiana Last Time Out
The No. 16/17 Hoosiers improved their record to 4-1 with a 79-63 win over Eastern Michigan on Dec. 3. The victory marked Indiana head coach Mike Davis' 100th career win at Indiana. Led by sophomore Robert Vaden's 18 points and freshman Ben Allen's career-high 15 points and team-high five rebounds, the Hoosiers finished with four players in double-figure scoring.
For the night, IU shot 55 percent from the field. IU netted 23 points off the bench en route to the victory.
Century Mark
With a 79-63 win over Eastern Michigan last Saturday, Indiana's Mike Davis earned his 100th victory as head coach. He improved to 100-68 (.595), and in doing so, he became the second-fastest coach in school history to reach the century mark in wins at Indiana. Bob Knight won his 100th game as a head coach during his fifth season as a head coach (1975-76), while Branch McCracken obtained win number 100 with a victory in his first game of his seventh season (1947-48).
Mr. Versatility
Injuries to Indiana's inside players has forced sophomore guard/forward Robert Vaden play out of position. However, he has shown his versatility while playing power forward, continuing to contribute to IU's success. In the Hoosiers 79-63 win over Eastern Michigan, the Indianapolis, Ind., native led the team with 18 points and seven assists. For the season, Vaden leads the team with an average of 6.4 assists per contest, while also contributing solid numbers of 13.6 points and 3.8 rebounds a game.
Introducing The Aussie
Freshman center Ben Allen had to step in for the injured Sean Kline against Eastern Michigan, and he did not disappoint. The 6-10 Australian came off the bench to collect a career-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Additionally, he also collected five rebounds and a steal in 23 minutes of action - all of which are career bests. For the season, Allen is averaging 6.2 points and 2.6 rebounds, while also hitting 5-of-6 (.833) three-pointers on the campaign.
Marco The Great
Senior forward Marco Killingsworth showed why he is one of the best basketball players in the nation. In two games last week, the Montgomery, Ala., native averaged 24.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. In doing so, he was named co-Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season. He became the first Hoosier sine Steve Alford (Jan. 30, 1984 and Feb. 14, 1984) to win two conference player of the week honors in a three-week period.
Facing the reigning National Defensive Player of the Year, Shelden Williams, and No.1 Duke on Nov. 30, Killingsworth hit 15-of-20 shots and accounted for a career-high 34 points to go along with 10 boards. It marked Indiana's the first 30-plus point and 10-plus rebound effort since Alan Henderson had 41 points and 13 rebounds at Michigan State on March 9, 1994.
For the season, Killingsworth ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring (21.6), fourth in field goal percentage (.677) and sixth in rebounding (8.4).
Give Us More
Three-point shooting is a trademark of Mike Davis-coached teams, and IU's perimeter performance against Eastern Michigan (10 three-pointers) marked the 34th time in the Davis Era that IU has had 10-plus treys. Indiana is 26-8 in such contests. This season alone, the Hoosiers have accomplished the feat on four occasions, and they are 4-0 in such instances.
