BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In the initial fall release, Indiana stood in 30th place in the United States Sports Academy/National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Cup standings, as announced by NACDA on Dec. 1. Field hockey and men's cross country are the sports incorporated into the Hoosiers' ranking.
Standings for the 2005-06 Sports Academy Directors' Cup are based upon the size of the bracket. A minimum of five (5) points will be awarded to any team that places 65th or lower. The national team champion receives 100 points, while the second-place team gets 90, third place receives 85, and the fourth-place team finishes 80. Consistent with this scale, IU received 30 points for its fifth-place finish in field hockey and 16 points for its 29th-place effort in men's cross country.
This season, Indiana head field hockey coach Amy Robertson's Hoosiers finished with a 17-5 overall record, including a stunning victory over No. 5 North Carolina in the first round to send Indiana to the Elite Eight in the program's initial NCAA Tournament appearance. Victories over six ranked opponents landed IU a No. 9 ranking in the final NFHCA poll. In 2005, Robertson mentored one Honda Award semifinalist, one Big Ten Player of the Year, two All-Americans, four first team All-Big Ten selections and three first team All-West Region honorees.
Coach Robert Chapman's cross country team traveled to Terre Haute, Ind., and the campus of Indiana State University for the NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 21. In the prestigious field of 31 teams, IU took 29th, paced once again by All-American senior Sean Jefferson who took 20th place with a time of 30:09. Jefferson earned All-America honors for the third time in cross country and the sixth time overall (including track and field). This feat has only been accomplished by Hoosier greats Jim Spivey (1978,1979,1980,1982) and Bob Kennedy (1988,1989,1990, 1992).
IU's best fall placement in the series came in 1998-99 when the Hoosiers took eighth-place heading into the winter championships. That season, IU boasted the first of back-to-back men's soccer titles, while both women's soccer and volleyball turned in 17th-place performances. That effort also stands as the greatest seasonal performance in the NACDA Cup for Indiana.
Indiana's most impressive winter finish in the series came in 2001-02 when the Hoosiers took 14th place heading into the spring championships. That season, Indiana enjoyed an incredible NCAA Tournament run by the men's basketball team to claim second, while women's track and field captured eighth at the indoor meet and women's swimming tied for 10th.
