Russell Races To IU Athlete of the Week Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Dec. 4, junior swimmer Colin Russell garnered the distinction.
"Colin has had a very good couple of weeks," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "He earned a spot on the Canadian Commonwealth Games team and set a school record in the 200 freestyle. This award is a fitting honor for the kind of success he has had recently."
The Barrie, Ontario product rocketed to a record-breaking time of 1:35.50 in the 200-yard freestyle against No. 17 Northwestern. Most remarkably, the effort eclipsed his school standard set at the Big Ten Championships last year. This type of mid-season speed is unheard of in Looze's intense early season training.
Additionally, Russell raced to four event titles during the meet. His anchor leg salted away the ninth-fastest time in school history in the 200-yard medley relay. Furthermore, he followed up the quick time in the 200 free with a B-cut effort in the 50 free triumph. Russell then helped IU to a relay sweep with another anchor performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Russell earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving nominees. The list included senior Jenny DeMuth (women's basketball), senior Ryan Fagan (men's diving), freshman Allison Kay (women's swimming) and senior Marco Killingsworth (men's basketball).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior Jenny DeMuth (Women's Basketball):
Not only did she score in double figures in all three games, she also had two consecutive double-doubles, as she had 13 points, 14 rebounds, tying her career-high against Southern Illinois and recorded 19 points, 13 rebounds against Louisville. She also scored 16 points and had six rebounds against Belmont. The Highland, Ind., native averaged 16.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg over the course of week.
Senior Ryan Fagan (Men's Diving):
He helped IU to a victory over No. 17 Northwestern with a first-place finish in the one-meter and a third-place effort in the three-meter.
Freshman Allison Kay (Women's Swimming):
She co-led the team with three titles in a 159-141 win over Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Dec. 2. Notably, Kay improved her own eighth-fastest time in school history with a B-cut time of 2:01.20 for the win in the 200-yard butterfly.
Senior Marco Killingsworth (Men's Basketball):
Facing the reigning National Defensive Player of the Year, Shelden Williams, and top-ranked Duke on Nov. 30, Killingsworth hit 15-of-20 from the field and accounted for a career-high 34 points to go along with 10 boards. Killingsworth followed that performance up with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists in a victory over Eastern Michigan on Dec. 3. He was 6-of-9 from the field in the win.
