Leading to the Hoosiers' spring-opening event, the Central District Invitational on Feb. 21-22 in Parrish, Fla., IUHOOSIERS.COM will feature each IU newcomer from the 2005-06 recruiting class. Tiffany Hockensmith is first up in the spotlight.
Hockensmith is a product of Bloomington South High School, where she was tabbed the 2003 Mountain Dew Player of the Year. She was also honored as one of eight females from the state of Indiana selected to the Tri-State Challenge team - a feat she accomplished in 2003 and 2004.
The talented performer from Bloomington, Ind., competed well in many tournaments during her high school career, highlighted by capturing the 2003 Indiana Girls State Juniors championship. She also was the top finisher at the Plantations Junior Golf Tournament in 2004.
Furthermore, Hockensmith was a sectional medalist in 2003. She finished second at the 2004 Indiana High School Athletic Association Conference and was fifth in qualifying at the 2004 Girls' State Junior Championship (73-77/150).
Hockensmith broke the 70-stroke mark at the 2004 City Tournament where she shot a second-round 68 in the match-play event. She was captain of her team and selected the team's most valuable golfer in 2003 and 2004.
What is your favorite golf course to play?
"IU Golf Course for the memories I have there. I also like the Bridgewater Club in Carmel, Ind."
If you had a choice, who would you invite to play a round a golf with and why?
"Tiger Woods because he is someone I try to emulate. If not him, then Arnold Palmer or my dad."
Why did you choose to become a student-athlete at Indiana?
"I live here in Bloomington and the fact that I know the facilities, team members and coaches and I think they are all great. My mom also had a great influence because she wanted me to stay close to home."
What was the best advice given to you on your way to playing collegiate golf?
"My dad gave me the best advice. He told me when I first started golf he told me I need to work harder and have no excuses. The harder I work, the better I can be and he instilled that in me from a very young age."
What was the highlight/best moment of your golf career up to this point?
"Playing at Tri-State because there are a lot of people I know who play in that. Also winning the Girls State Juniors in 2003."
