BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana sophomore Laura McGaffigan has been sharp this spring by compiling a record of 4-0 from the No. 3 singles position. She picked up a win against No. 108 Jennifer Zika, of Duke, on Jan. 28. IUHOOSIERS.com had a chance to talk to Laura about how she got into tennis, the team so far this spring and the "O.C."
On The Court:
How and when did you start to play tennis?
LM: "I started playing when I was real young. My first tournament was when I was eight years old. My whole family played. I have three sisters who played. One of my sisters played at Illinois, she graduated in December, and the other is a senior at Wisconsin."
When did you know you wanted to pursue tennis in college?
LM: "When I was in high school, I would go to a lot of my sister's matches. I thought college tennis was cool. It was just something that I always wanted to do."
How has Indiana head coach Lin Loring helped your game improve since you arrived at IU?
LM: "He has taught me so much. I really feel like I have improved a lot since I came to college. He and Ramiro [Azcui] are just awesome coaches. They have helped me with both singles and doubles. They make practice so fun, but at the same time we learn a lot."
On the team so far this spring:
LM: "Our coaches prepare us so well for all the our matches. The team has practiced real hard through the fall and winter and it is starting to pay off. I think we will only get better the rest of the season."
On playing two tough teams in Duke and North Carolina (Jan. 28-29):
LM: "They had a lot of depth. It was cool to know that we can compete with some of the best teams in the country. I think the matches were a lot closer than the score showed. I feel like we were in a lot of those matches."
Off The Court:
How influential is your family in your life?
LM: "My parents come to most of the matches and I get a lot of support from them and my sisters."
What do you like to do in your spare time?
LM: "I like to hang out with friends and watch movies. I'm in a sorority (Kappa Kappa Gamma), so I like to get involved with that."
How are your classes this semester?
LM: "My classes are pretty tough. I decided that I want to be a business major and this is a very good business school (Kelley School of Business). It's a lot of hard work, but it will pay off."
What is your favorite restaurant in Bloomington?
LM: "Scotty's. I'm a big fan of the waffle fries."
What is your favorite T.V. show?
LM: "The `O.C.' definitely. Every week I make sure to watch it and if I'm busy, then I will tape it."
