Defense Shuts Down No. 6 Cal

"Our defense in the second half was amazing," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "For these women to shutout the country's sixth-ranked team in the second half is pretty impressive. I was very pleased with the effort that we put forth. Jesse (Goldner) had an amazing game. She was on fire and stopped everything that Cal threw at her."
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner made 16 saves against the Golden Bears. It marked the 29th time in her career that Goldner registered 10 or more saves in the match. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native has made 15 or more saves for the second time against the Golden Bears and the sixth time in her career.
The Hoosiers (3-1) led after the opening period, 5-4. IU scored the first two and the last two goals of the opening period. After the Cream and Crimson jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, the Golden Bears (1-1) rattled off three straight to take a 3-2 advantage. The two teams traded goals before IU scored the final pair to take a one-goal advantage into the second period.
Indiana led 6-5 at the half with each team scoring one goal in the second period. The Hoosiers would shut down Cal in the second half, outscoring the Golden Bears, 2-0, in the second 14 minutes of play.
Senior Krista Peterson and sophomore Kristin Zernicke each added a pair of goals in the victory for the Hoosiers. The pair of goals from Zernicke equaled a career high. It marked the fifth time in her career she scored two goals in a match.
The Hoosiers also got goals from senior Kandace Waldthaler, junior Janis Pardy, freshman Carolyn Conway and junior Emily Schimitt. Waldthaler continues to lead the Hoosiers in scoring with her sixth tally of the season.
The win marked the first time the Hoosiers had beaten the Golden Bears in school history. IU was 0-5 entering the match against Cal, including a 10-3 loss to the Golden Bears in 2003 at the Stanford Invite.
Indiana will face No. 7 Hawaii at the Stanford Invitational, Saturday night at 7 p.m. (PT). The Hoosiers will then take on No. 2 USC on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. (PT). The Cream and Crimson will wrap up the Stanford Invite against an opponent yet to be determined. The Hoosiers are part of the A Bracket with USC, Cal and Hawaii. The B Bracket consists of No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Stanford, No. 11 San Jose and No. 12 UC-Davis. The first, second third and fourth-place finishers in each bracket will square off in the place matches. The championship match is set for 4:30 p.m. (PT) on Sunday. The third-place game is at 3:20 p.m. (PT), while the fifth and seventh-place games are set for 2:10 p.m. (PT) and 1 p.m. (PT) on Sunday.
