IU Downs Second Top 10 Foe

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 10 Indiana women's water polo team knocked off its second top 10 foe on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational. After defeating No. 6 California, 8-5, to start the Invite, the Hoosiers defeated No. 7 Hawaii, 8-7, in the nightcap.
"We played strong against Hawaii," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "It was a much more physical game than our morning game against Cal. We responded to it and did a good job of adjusting from the morning. We did a good job drawing ejections. We drew 11 ejections, and only allowed six. We did really well considering how physical they were."
The pair of wins over top 10 opponents marked the first time in the eight-year history of the program that Indiana has defeated a pair of top 10 teams on the same day. Coupled with their win earlier this season against then-No. 9 Michigan, the Hoosiers have defeated three top 10 opponents, also a first in the program's annals.
The Hoosiers led 3-2 after the first period of play. The Cream and Crimson opened up a two-goal advantage, 6-4, at the half. Hawaii closed to within one at 8-7 entering the final period of play. The Hoosier defense would hold strong as both teams went scoreless in the fourth period.
Senior Krista Peterson and freshman Carolyn Conway each notched a pair of goals in the victory for the Hoosiers. IU also got goals from senior Kandace Waldthaler and juniors Emily Schmitt, Janis Pardy and Clare Meadows.
With their goal totals on the day, Conway and Waldthaler are tied for the team lead with seven goals on the season. Peterson after scoring two goals against both Cal and Hawaii has six markers on the year. Schmitt and Pardy each tallied their fourth goals on the season, while Meadows scored her second on the campaign.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner led the Hoosier defense with 11 saves. It marked the 30th time in Goldner's career that she registered double-digit saves. She had 14 saves in 2004 against Hawaii in the Aloha Classic.
Freshman Monika Kruszona led Hawaii with four goals. The Hoosier defense was up to the task against 2004 third team All-American Beth Novick, limiting her to only one goal on the evening. Novick averaged 2.4 goals a game in 2004, tallying 64 on the season and leading the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The victory was the first over the Rainbow Wahine for the Hoosiers. IU was 0-6 all-time entering the match against Hawaii, including a 10-8 loss at the Aloha Classic a season ago.
The Cream and Crimson will face a pair of tough tests on Sunday at the Stanford Invite. IU will wrap up their round robin bracket play against defending national champion and No. 2-ranked USC at 9:30 a.m. (PT). With the victories on Saturday, the Hoosiers can finish no worse than second in their round robin bracket. Indiana will likely face either No. 1 UCLA or No. 3 Stanford in the second match of Sunday at either 3:20 p.m. (PT) or 4:30 p.m. (PT). If the Hoosiers can knock off the Trojans, IU would likely play UCLA at 4:30 p.m. (PT) for the championship, otherwise they would play host and No. 3-ranked Stanford at 3:20 p.m. (PT) in the third-place game.
