Szczesny Leaves IU Program

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana linebacker Paul Szczesny has left the Hoosier football program and withdrawn from school, IU head coach Terry Hoeppner announced today.
"There is a lot of enthusiasm around our program right now, as there should be. We're excited about our recruiting class, and I really like our attitude in winter conditioning," Hoeppner said. "The number one thing I preach to our football team is to be a champion in everything you do - in the classroom, on the field and in life. Everyone needs to be on the same page with that approach. We're disappointed that Paul is leaving, but we wish him the best in his future endeavors, especially in dealing with and overcoming the personal challenges he has faced in the last few months."
Szczesny transferred to Indiana from Pima (Ariz.) Community College in January, 2004. He started all nine games in which he played at Indiana and finished with 71 tackles (third on the team). He had a career-high 13 tackles at Northwestern and 11 tackles each at Kentucky and against Michigan State. His best all-around game came on Nov. 13 against Penn State, when he finished with seven tackles, two pass deflections and his first career interception.
Coach Hoeppner considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.
