Hoosiers Fall to No. 2 USC

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 10 Indiana women's water polo team carried over its intensity from Saturday, but fell short against defending national champion and No. 2- ranked USC, 9-5. With the loss, the Hoosiers finished bracket `A' of the Stanford Invitational in second-place with a 2-1 record. On the season, the Hoosiers are now 4-2, while USC improved to 5-0.
"I am proud of the way the ladies played against the No. 2 team in the country," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "After an impressive day on Saturday, we didn't rest on our laurels. We came out and played hard against the defending national champions. In this Invitational, we have had three different matches and responded to the challenge each time."
The Hoosiers trailed 3-1 after the opening period of play against the Women of Troy. The defending national champions scored two quick goals, three minutes into the second period, and went on for the four-goal victory. IU would trail 5-1 at the half and 7-3 following the third period. The Hoosiers kept pace with the Trojans in the second half as each team tallied four goals after the break.
Indiana got goals from seniors Krista Peterson and Kandace Waldthaler to go along with tallies from juniors Clare Meadows, Janis Pardy and Emily Schmitt. The quartet of Peterson, Waldthaler, Pardy and Schmitt scored at least one goal in all three matches of the Stanford Invitational. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner registered seven saves in the loss.
The goal for Waldthaler was her team-leading eighth on the year, while Peterson notched her seventh, good for second on team. Schmitt and Pardy each scored their fifth goals on the season, while Meadows scored her third on the campaign.
The Hoosiers are now 0-4 all-time against the Trojans. The match up at the Stanford Invite was the first between the two schools since the National Collegiate Championship in 1999.
Indiana will take on No. 3 Stanford at 3:20 p.m. (PT) in the third-place match of the Invitational. The Cardinal took second in bracket `B' with victories over No. 11 San Jose State and No. 12 UC-Davis, while falling to No. 1 UCLA.
