Indiana Takes 4th at Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 10 Indiana women's water polo team took fourth at the Stanford Invitational, falling in the third-place match to No. 3 Stanford, 11-4. The Hoosiers finished the Invitational with a 2-2 mark, including victories over No. 6 California and No. 7 Hawaii.
"We fought hard against Stanford, but we just ran out of gas in the second half," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We are not used to having to put four great efforts together in a row like that, and I think it showed in the second half against Stanford. All in all, the women gave a terrific effort against some of the best teams in the country. It is definitely the best series of four games against top competition that Indiana has ever had."
The Hoosiers are 4-3 overall on the season with three victories over top 10 foes. The three IU losses came at the hands of the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the country. Stanford improves to 4-1 with the victory.
IU trailed 4-1 after the opening period of play. Junior Janis Pardy scored in her sixth consecutive game for the Hoosiers, tallying the lone first period marker.
The Cream and Crimson would battle back to within two goals at the half, 6-4. Senior Kandace Waldthaler, sophomore Kristin Zernicke and freshman Carolyn Conway each tallied second period goals for the Hoosiers. Stanford would put the game away in the third, scoring five unanswered goals. The two top 10 adversaries played a scoreless fourth period.
Waldthaler continues to lead the Hoosiers in goals with nine on the season. The Fairfield, Calif., native scored in all four matches at the Stanford Invitational. Conway remains second on the team in goals with eight, while Zernicke notched her fourth tally of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner continued her stellar Stanford Invite with another impressive performance. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native recorded 12 saves against the No. 3 Cardinal, including a four-meter penalty shot save. It was her 31st career double-digit save performance. She finished the Invite with a total of 46 saves, including three games of 10 or more stops.

The Hoosiers knocked off a pair of top 10 teams on Saturday with an 8-5 win over No. 6 California and an 8-7 triumph of No. 7 Hawaii. It marked the first victories over the two programs in school history, and the first time IU had defeated two top 10 opponents on the same day.
The Cream and Crimson will have two weeks off before taking part in the Gaucho 24 Team Invitational. The Invite will be held on the campus of UC-Santa Barbara will be held Friday, Feb. 25, through Sunday, Feb. 27. The Gaucho Invitational will include a number of the top teams in the country.
