IU Ranked Sixth in Latest Poll

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's water polo team has been setting a lot of firsts in the program's history as of late, and that trend continued on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The Women's Collegiate Top 20 was released with the Hoosiers ranked sixth. It is the highest ranking in the program's eight-year history.
"I thought the ladies played extremely well at the Stanford Invite," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We are deserving of this ranking from what we have been able to accomplish and the effort the women have put forth. Our goal is to win the CWPA and be in the NCAA Championship at the end of the season in Michigan. This helps us along and puts us closer to that goal."
The No. 6 ranking comes on the heels of a fourth-place showing at the Stanford Invitational. The Hoosiers knocked off then-No. 6 California, 8-5, and then-No. 7 Hawaii, 8-7, on the first day of the Invite. It marked the first time in school history that IU knocked off a pair of top 10 teams on the same day. Defeating No. 6 California was also the highest ranked opponent that IU had knocked off in school history.
Paired with a victory earlier this season against then-No. 9 Michigan, the three victories over top 10 foes is the most in school history. It eclipsed the total of two set by the 2003 squad. Indiana is currently 4-3 on the season. The Hoosiers three losses have come to No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 USC and No. 3 Stanford.
Previously the highest ranking the water polo program held was ninth on five separate occasions. The Hoosiers were ninth in the Jan. 21, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25 polls in 2004 as well as the April 30 and May 14 polls of 2003.
The Cream and Crimson will take part in the Gaucho 24 Team Invitational on the campus of UC-Santa Barbara. The Invite will be held Friday, Feb. 25, through Sunday, Feb. 27. The Gaucho Invitational will include a number of the top teams in the country, including 19 of the top 20 programs.
