KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 29 Indiana women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision at No. 18 Tennessee on Saturday afternoon in the Goodfriend Tennis Center. With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 4-4 on the spring, while the Lady Vols improve to 4-2.
Tennessee secured the doubles point and won three of four singles contests en route to the win.
"We played good in spots," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "Overall we played pretty good."
The match got off to a strong start for the Hoosiers as the doubles team of sophomore Laura McGaffigan and freshman Brianna Williams won at the No. 2 spot, 8-3, over senior Ashley Robards and freshman Ghizela Schutte. The duo is now 4-4 overall and 3-2 on the spring season.
The Lady Vols evened the tandem competition at 1-1, as the pair of freshman Bryce Marable and sophomore Blakeley Griffith bested senior Dora Vastag and sophomore Cecile Perton, 8-4, at No. 3.
The doubles point would come down to the final match between junior Sarah Batty and sophomore Kara Zeder against juniors Sabita Maharaj and Melissa Schaub. The Hoosiers took a 6-4 lead in the match, but UT battled back to even the contest at 7-7, and eventually came away with a 9-7 decision, and the lone doubles point.
"We had them at match point, serving at 7-6," Loring said. "They hit some great shots to win the match. I think that the momentum carried over into the singles match."
Batty evened the match at 1-1 with a straight-set win at the No. 2 singles position. The Chesterfield, England, product defeated Griffith by the margin of 6-1, 6-3. Batty is now 9-3 overall and pushed her spring ledger to 6-2.
"This was a great win for Sarah," Loring said. "She had won five-straight matches. Sarah played a strong match."
The Lady Vols won the next three singles matches securing the team victory. Sophomore Victoria Jones, ranked 104th in the nation, upended Williams, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, and Maharaj, ranked 50th in the country, best Vastag, ranked 91st, 6-2, 6-4, at the top singles spot. Tennessee clinched the match as Marable topped McGaffigan, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3.
The fifth and sixth matches were not played.
The Hoosiers will return to the courts tomorrow, Feb. 20, for a showdown with No. 7 Kentucky. The match is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m., at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex in Lexington.
