PARRISH, Fla. - The Indiana women's golf team, playing in its first event of the spring season, finished with a score of 639 (316-323) to sit in 14th after the opening day of the Central District Classic on Monday. The tournament is being played on the 6,009-yard, par 72 River Wilderness Country Club.
"Really, I felt we played pretty good," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "We got off to a really good start in the opening round. The girls played solid in the morning, but the conditions were a little tougher in the afternoon. We are competing against a tough field with 11 ranked teams, but we are feeling confident heading into (Tuesday)."
Missouri, ranked 13th in the nation and one of 11 ranked teams competing in the tournament, leads the 15-team field with an 11-over 587 (292-295). No. 20 Arkansas sits just two strokes back at 589 (296-293) with No. 43 Baylor (300-295/595) in third.
Following the Bears, last year's defending champions, No. 14 LSU (303-296/599) is currently in fourth, while No. 23 Michigan (307-303) and No. 45 Texas A&M (306-304) round out the top five, each posting a 610 during the opening rounds.
Freshman Elaine Harris, competing in just her fourth tournament as a collegiate player (participated in three during the fall season), leads IU with two rounds of 76 to finish at a tie for 27th with an eight-over par 154.
"Elaine played two unbelievable rounds," said Wallman. "She was tied for seventh after the morning round and had a couple of tough holes in the afternoon. Without those, she could have easily finished under 75."
The lone senior in the group, Bethany Brunner, is just behind Harris in a tie for 40th overall with a 157 (78-79). Junior Molly Redfearn, who led the team with an average of 79.08 per round during the fall, carded a 163 (83-80) to place in a tie for 66th, while junior Katie Carlson follows closely behind with a 167 (82-85) to tie for 69th heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. Freshman Stephanie Mayotte, making her collegiate debut, rounds out the Hoosiers with a 171 (83-88) to place in 75th.
