IU Travels to Gaucho Invite

The Hoosiers' round robin bracket includes No. 12 San Jose State and Cal State-San Bernardino. Indiana will take on Cal State-San Bernardino to open the Invitational at 9:40 a.m. (PT), before battling No. 12 San Jose State at 6:20 p.m. (PT). The Hoosiers' bracket will play in the UCSB Rec Center Pool.
Along with the Hoosiers, 18 other ranked teams will take part in the Gaucho 24 Team Invitational. Those 17 teams include: No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 USC, No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 Long Beach State, No. 5 Loyola Marymount, No. 7 California, No. 8 UC-Santa Barbara, No. 9 Hawaii, No. 10 San Diego State, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 San Jose State, No. 12 UC-Davis, No. 14 Cal State-Northridge, No. 15 UC-San Diego, No. 16 UC-Irvine, No. 18 Arizona State and No. 19 Princeton. The other six teams participating in the tournament are Cal State-Bakersfield, Pacific, Redlands, Cal State-San Bernardino, Santa Clara and Marist.
Indiana will take on the opposite placing in Bracket C in the corresponding quarterfinal flight, either 1st-8th, 9th-16th or 17th-24th. Bracket C includes No. 3 Stanford, No. 15 UC-San Diego and Pacific.

Scouting No. 12 San Jose State
|The Spartans enter the Gaucho 24 Team Invitational with a 3-5 record. San Jose State has defeated No.12 UC-Davis on two occasions (10-9 in OT and 8-7 at the Stanford Invite) and then-No. 20 Santa Clara, 10-6. The Spartans have lost to No. 1 UCLA (9-4), No. 3 Stanford (9-3), then-No. 8 California (13-9), No. 9 Hawaii (5-4), then-No. 17 Cal State-Northridge (6-4).
Indiana and San Jose State have four common opponents this season with San Jose State going 0-4 against the quartet, while the Hoosiers are 2-2. The four teams are No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Stanford, No. 7 California and No. 9 Hawaii.
Junior Krissy Hansell and freshman Kendra Adama have split time at the goalkeeper in 2005. Each have played five games with a total of 16 quarters. Hansell has 33 saves on the season, while Adama has 24.
Senior defender Mary Beth Cox leads the Spartans with 12 goals on the season. Sophomore defender Rachel Rhodes ranks second on the squad with nine goals on the season. Senior two-meter Laura Scott led the Spartans with 49 goals in 2004. Scott ranks third on the team with eight goals this season.
IU is 1-4 during the program's history against San Jose State. The two teams last met in 2003, with each team picking up a victory. IU defeated the Spartans, 10-8, at the Michigan Invitational, before SJSU returned the favor with an 11-9 victory at the Stanford Invite.
Senior Krista Peterson had three goals in each of the two games in 2003. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner had eight saves against SJSU in the Michigan Invite and 10 at the Stanford Invitational.
Scouting Cal State-San Bernardino
The Coyotes enter the Gaucho Invitational at 3-5 on the season. CSUSB defeated Whittier College (6-3), Cal State-East Bay (6-5) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-5). Their losses have come to defending Division III national champion Redlands (6-5), defending Division I national champion USC (18-4), No. 14 Cal State-Northridge (15-7), Cal Baptist (9-6) and No. 15 UC-San Diego (10-0). Cal State-San Bernardino finished the 2004 season at 23-16 under head coach Tom Finwall, who enters his third season with the Coyotes.
CSUSB suffered a loss in the opening week of the season. The Coyotes lost leading scorer senior Sarah Reneker, to a broken hand against Redlands on Jan. 30. She has 238 career goals for the Coyotes, including 117 in 2004.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Cooper has played every game in net for the Coyotes. She has three double-digit save performances, including 10 against No. 2 USC. She also had 13 saves against Whittier and 11 against Redlands.
Freshman utility Freyja Berg leads CSUSB with 12 goals on the season, while fellow classmate Brandy Bray ranks second with nine. Junior Bridget Berg, Freyja's older sister, is third on the team with six goals. Sophomore Abby Rich rounds out the top four scorers with the Coyotes with four.
The Hoosiers are 1-0 all-time against Cal State-San Bernardino with a 9-5 victory in 2003. Senior Krista Peterson had two goals and three assists in the victory for the Hoosiers. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner had 17 saves and three steals in the win.

Goldner Named POW
Indiana senior Jessica Goldner was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Player of the Week following her performance at the Stanford Invitational, Feb. 12-13. The goalkeeper from Los Altos Hills, Calif., led the No. 6 Hoosiers to a 2-2 mark, including a pair of victories over then-No. 6 California and then-No. 7 Hawaii.
Goldner leads the country in saves with 68, and saves per game at 11.3 at of Feb. 15. The four-year starter made 46 saves at the Stanford Invite with a season-high 16 stops against California. The Hoosiers defeated the Golden Bears, 8-5, including a second half shutout that featured Goldner's 10 blocks. She came up with 11 saves the following match in an 8-7 win over then-No. 7 Hawaii.
The Hoosiers dropped a pair of matches to No. 2 USC, 9-5, and No. 3 Stanford, 11-4. Goldner made seven saves against USC and 12 against No. 3 Stanford, including a four-meter penalty shot save. With Goldner's 10-plus save performances against Cal, Hawaii and Stanford, she recorded her 29th, 30th and 31st double-digit save matches.
Firsts in Hoosier History
The Indiana women's water polo team has been resetting the program's record books so far this season. Here is a look at some of the firsts for the program in 2005:
- The victories over then-No. 6 Cal and then-No. 7 Hawaii marked the first time in school history the Hoosiers had defeated a pair of top 10 opponents in the same day.
- Coupled with the victory earlier this season against then-No. 9 Michigan, IU has defeated a program-best three top 10 opponents in a single season.
-The win over California marks the highest ranked opponent IU has defeated in the program's annals.
- The victories over Cal and Hawaii were the first for the Hoosiers against those two western schools.
- The Cream and Crimson are ranked sixth in the latest Women's Collegiate Top 20, released on Feb. 16. It is the highest ranking in the program's history. Previously, the highest ranking the water polo program held was ninth on five separate occasions. The Hoosiers were ninth in the Jan. 21, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25 polls in 2004 as well as the April 30 and May 14 polls of 2003.
- The Hoosiers defeated then-No. 9 Michigan, 7-6, at the Michigan Invitational. It was the first victory over the Wolverines in their last 16 matches. The victory was also the first over Michigan since the Wolverines became a varsity program in 2001.
