Diving Rolls Through One-Meter, Five Pushed to Championship Finals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The No. 13 Indiana men's swimming and diving squad pushed five divers to the championship finals of the one-meter event and secured the 11th-place points in the preliminaries of the 2005 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on Feb. 24. The one-meter competition featured some incredible dives as five-time Big Ten Diver of the Week senior Marc Carlton claimed the top-qualifying spot with a 341.15 string of dives.
"I felt good," Carlton said. "I have been averaging 330 points in practice, so this was a better than average performance for me. I just need to do some things a bit better tonight. As a team, this is our weakest event and we stepped it up. Will (Bohonyi) really did a good job for us."
Sophomore Brian Mariano posted the second-most points with a personal-best 336.25, while junior Jesse Rappaport finished fourth with a 317.00. Additionally, freshman Taylor Roberts notched a career-high with a 315.90 tally for fifth place and senior Brian Metzler edged out Penn State junior Marc Gastaldo by .15 to advance to this evening's competition with an eighth-place 304.35. Senior Alex Burns snared six points for the IU coffer with his 11th-place effort of 294.95.
Meanwhile, freshman Will Bohonyi recorded a personal-best 273.60 for 18th place, while junior Ryan Fagan placed 21st with a 267.95 tally.
"It was a good start," Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "This is our weakest event. We did a lot to prepare for it since we knew it was important to start off strong. Some of our guys made some changes. We also knew that it would come down to whether we hit our reverse two-and-a-half dives. I am pretty impressed that my guys responded to that challenge. It is something I will always remember from this meet."
Next up, the Cream and Crimson continue the 2005 Big Ten Championships at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 24 at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn., with finals competition.
