Teammates Battle in 200 IM

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - In the morning session of the 2005 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn., both freshman Todd Patrick and junior Kevin Swander surpassed Sergio Lopez's 16-year old 200-yard IM record as both cleared the previous standard of 1:48.25. After Swander shattered the record in the previous heat with a 1:47.87, Patrick one-upped the upperclassman with a new record of his own at 1:47.71.
"I don't see the record standing for long," Swander said. "I am going into tonight to see how fast I can get Todd to go."
Patrick and Swander both know that there is a lot more on the line tonight than who will own IU's 200-yard IM record at the end of the day. The duo, however, both hope that battling each other will only help them move ahead of other competitors and secure extra points for the Hoosier cause.
 Junior Kevin Swander owned the 200 IM record for a heat.

At the end of the day, Indiana will see how much impact internal competition has on the overall success of the team at the league meet.
