Hoosiers Down CSUSB, 14-4

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 6 Indiana women's water polo team started the scoring barrage early and often on it way to a 14-4 victory over Cal State-San Bernardino on the first day of the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter on their way to an 11-2 halftime advantage. The Cream and Crimson improved to 5-3 on the season, while Cal State-San Bernardino dropped to 3-6.

"I wanted the ladies to come out and play well early," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "It was good to see them respond to that change. We had a really good start to the match. Being able to come out and take care of business early sets us up for matches later."

Senior Krista Peterson and freshman Carolyn Conway each registered hat tricks in the victory, while junior Janis Pardy registered four assists. Pardy's four helpers were the fourth most in school history behind three players with five in a game. Peterson finished with four goals, the 27th hat trick of her career, and Conway had three tallies, all in the first half, for her second career hat trick.

Conway got the Hoosiers started early with two goals in the opening minute of play. The Newport Beach, Calif., native scored off her own rebound just 24 seconds into the match. She followed that up with a counter attack goal off the assist from Pardy with 5:59 remaining in the opening period.

Peterson and junior Emily Schmitt added tallies before the four-minute mark, staking the Hoosiers to a 4-0 advantage. Peterson scored with IU on the 6-on-5 advantage off the assist from Pardy. Schmitt notched her first four-meter penalty shot goal of the year with 4:01 remaining in the opening period. Freshman Linda Calvert drew the four-meter foul, one of her three drawn ejections in the game.

CSUSB found the back of the net with the 6-on-5 advantage just under three minutes remaining in the opening period. Sophomore Claire Nicholson responded with a 6-on-5 advantage goal less than 40 seconds later for the Hoosiers. The Coyotes scored the final goal of the period with just over a minute remaining, making the score 5-2 at the end of the first.

Conway started the second period the same way she started the first. The freshman center scored less than a minute into the period off a backhand in the post. Freshman Brittany Estrada registered her fourth assist of the year on the goal

The next 1:30 of the match belonged to Peterson. The Portland, Ore., native notched a trio of tallies over that span to push the advantage to 9-2. Senior Kandace Waldthaler added a counter attack goal off the assist from senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner pushing the lead to 10-2 with 2:25 remaining in the half. Schmitt notched the final tally of the half with a 1:37 remaining off a shot from the perimeter.

The sophomore trio of Kara Woolley, Kristin Zernicke and Nicholson each added second half goals for the Cream and Crimson. The Hoosiers scored a season-high 14 makers in the victory.

All three Hoosier goalkeepers saw action in the win. Goldner played the first half making seven saves with one assist and one steal. Freshman Jackie Pyrz played the third period picking up two saves and a steal. Fellow classmate Jenny Gonzales tended the final period of action, making five saves, while facing eight shots.

The Hoosiers will face No. 12 San Jose State tonight at 6:20 p.m. PT at the Rec Center Pool on the campus of UCSB. The winner of the match will play No. 3 Stanford in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 9:10 a.m. PT.
