SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Indiana women's water polo team dropped a difficult 7-6 match to No. 12 San Jose State on Friday evening at the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational. The Hoosiers fell behind 5-1 in the opening half of play and could not recover before the final horn. Indiana falls to 5-4 on the season.
"I am very proud of the way the ladies battled," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "Some things didn't go their way, but they never gave up. We showed a lot of character to continually battle back. A lesser team would have given up and probably lost by a lot more."
The Spartans used the 6-on-5 advantage to garner the lead from the start, scoring all three of their first period goals with the advantage. After SJSU scored in the opening minute of play, senior Krista Peterson responded with off the counter with 5:12 remaining in the first period. After receiving a pass from junior Janis Pardy, Peterson pumped before finding the right side of the net.
San Jose State would score a pair of one-player advantage goals in the final 45 seconds of the first period. The Spartans added two more goals in the second stanza to push the lead to 5-1 at the half.
Indiana would not go quietly and battled back. The Hoosiers scored the first two goals of the second half to cut the lead to two. Junior Emily Schmitt scored from the perimeter off a pass from Pardy at the 5:12 mark of the third period. Junior Clare Meadows showed shear determination, battling past a defender to gather a rebounded shot and put it in the cage with just under two minutes remaining.
It appeared as though the game would go to the fourth at 5-3, but the Spartans would score with under a second remaining in the third period. With the shot clock running down, SJSU threw a pass to the post over both the IU defender and Spartan offensive player. SJSU's Laura Scott was able to wheel around and get position before dumping the ball into the left side of the net.
The Spartans pushed the lead back to four just 19 seconds into the final period off a shot from the perimeter. The Hoosiers would continually battle back scoring the next three goals, but after the final IU tally with just eight seconds remaining, SJSU was able to run out the clock. Peterson, sophomore Kristin Zernicke and freshman Carolyn Conway added the Hoosiers final three markers of the match.
Peterson finished with a pair of goals in the match to bring her Invitational total to six. Pardy picked up a pair of assists and two steals against the Spartans. Peterson and Conway each had three drawn ejections against SJSU. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner finished with nine saves on the night.
Indiana will battle No. 15 UC-San Diego at 10:20 a.m. PT on day two of the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational. The game will be played at the Rec Center Pool. The winner will battle the winner of No. 16 UC-Irvine and No. 10 San Diego State on Saturday as well.
